August eNews | Help us Clear the Shelter + Cats Arriving from Maui

Help us Clear the Shelter this August!

Seattle Humane is once again participating in the Clear the Shelters campaign, where we join animal shelters across the country with the goal of finding loving families for as many pets as possible. Of course, the shelter will never truly be empty, because we are constantly pulling at-risk pets from overcrowded shelters here in Washington and across the country.
Now is a great time to find your new furry family member or make a donation in support of pets and the people who love them.
We hope to give the Clear the Shelters campaign a major boost with a one-day adoption event from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 26, where adoption fees for dogs and cats six months and older and all critters will be 50% off! Our friends from Hill’s, Seattle Humane and Clear the Shelters sponsor, will be at the event handing out goodies.
Our shelter is full of fur-bulous pets waiting to be your new best friend!

Supporting Our Community

We are heartbroken by the loss of life, land, homes and security so many people, pets and wildlife have suffered in the Maui wildfire. Seattle Humane, like so many individuals and organizations, has been exploring ways to help, even as the full impact of this tragedy continues to be tallied. We know many shelters on the island are working hard to balance their existing populations while also desperately trying to take in and reunite pets displaced in the fires. A large rescue flight would help unburden many shelters in Hawaii and increase their capacity to support Maui Humane and other local rescue groups. Shelters across the country are already struggling with overcrowding, and it takes many organizations coming together for a disaster flight of this scale to take off. We continue to proactively discuss with partners what that might look like in the near future.
We have confirmed a transfer this Thursday of cats and kittens from Maui through our friends at Good Cat Network. We hope to be able to help more soon, and we’re calling on our Rescue Squad to join us in this effort. The greatest way to help us increase our capacity at Seattle Humane is to adopt a shelter pet today to make room for more pets in need tomorrow!

Senior Dogs at Seattle Humane Fetch Grant

Sweet senior Taffy is all smiles after a successful dental surgery, thanks to the Grey Muzzle Fund.

Seattle Humane is one of 90 animal welfare groups chosen from 370 applicants to receive a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization to help save or improve the lives of at-risk senior dogs in our community. A portion of this grant went to immediate use to give Taffy—a stray senior pup with severe periodontal disease among other health matters—a winning smile and new leash on life.
Thanks to The Grey Muzzle Organization and our expert veterinary staff at the Schuler Family Medical Center, more senior dogs in our care and in the community will receive the medical treatment and love they deserve.
The national nonprofit The Grey Muzzle Organization improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries and other nonprofit groups nationwide. Visit www.greymuzzle.org for more details.

Fur Fighters Gather Ahead of Legislative Session

Seattle Humane was proud to welcome the Fur Fighters Caucus, a bipartisan group of Washington state legislators committed to supporting animal welfare issues, to our campus for their July 24 meeting. The caucus, led by Rep. Amy Walen, was founded in 2021 to champion bills that protect animals in Washington state. Caucus members were joined by representatives from local animal welfare advocates to review recent policy successes and discuss priority areas for the upcoming legislative session in January 2024.
Seattle Humane has identified Advocacy as a key priority in our 5-year strategic plan, Vision 2026. In partnership with our peers in animal welfare, we are committed to championing the rights of pets and people through both legislation and continued education. Our current areas of focus include eliminating pet restrictions in Washington state housing rentals and advocating for animal welfare career paths. We are grateful to be aligned with our many peer organizations in pursuing these aims as we find new ways to grow our impact together.
Thank you to all the legislators, voters and animal welfare organizations working together to improve the lives of animals here in our state.

More Than a Shelter: Support for Pet Owners

During the month of August, Seattle Humane team members are hard at work matching pets with loving families for Clear the Shelters. But, like every month, we’re also keenly focused on ensuring beloved pets never have to come through our shelter doors—meeting people where they are with the resources they need to keep their furry family members happy and healthy at home. Our Pet Food Bank alone provides roughly 82,000 meals per month to pets in need—that's nearly a million meals served in a year! Our dedicated veterinary team provides examinations, microchipping, vaccinations, testing and more through our Wellness Clinic, not to mention the many low-income spay/neuter surgeries performed inside our Schuler Family Medical Center. Seattle Humane also has donor-powered funds through our Pet Resource Center to help pet owners with emergency expenses that cover everything from pet deposits and temporary foster care to veterinary procedures and long-term treatments.
We at Seattle Humane believe everyone should be able to experience the love and companionship that comes with pet ownership, and a more humane world is one where that human-animal bond is strengthened—not broken. Learn more about these services and programs here.

Two New Board Members Join Seattle Humane

We are excited to welcome Nate King and Cristin Flynn Goodwin to the Seattle Humane Board of Directors.
Nate King has worked as a finance professional with Starbucks, local startups, and now at Amazon as an Investor Relations Principal. He volunteered as a finance committee member with Seattle Humane for nearly a decade prior to joining the board. Nate shares his life with his wife and three mixed-breed dogs.
Cristin Flynn Goodwin is founder and CEO of Advanced Cyber Strategies and Advanced Cyber Law. She spent many years at Microsoft, solving complex cybersecurity legal problems across the organization.
