A Kitten Season of Saving
Seattle Humane’s lifesaving work intensifies every Kitten Season as we begin to receive many orphaned kittens found in our community and those transferred to us from other shelters lacking space or the resources to tackle the medical needs of these incredibly vulnerable babies.
Many very young kittens coming in will not have been vaccinated, making them susceptible to numerous infectious diseases. The worst among them is panleukopenia, a deadly virus that can wipe out a kitten’s immune system and wreak havoc on their gastrointestinal system. Without immediate medical intervention, the likelihood of survival is extremely low.
Many shelters do not have the space to quarantine these kittens nor do they have the resources to treat them, which often results in euthanasia to prevent spreading panleukopenia to the rest of the cat population.
Our amazing veterinary team is already treating a number of kittens diagnosed with panleukopenia inside our isolation ward. They require IV catheters, round-the-clock fluids and medications several times per day.
The road to recovery is long, and we can’t perform this lifesaving work without your support. Please consider making a gift to help us heal the many sick kittens that will come through our doors this season and give them a second chance at finding their way into loving homes.
We Are Open During Construction!
Seattle Humane remains open and ready to serve our community during ongoing construction along Eastgate Way. The parking lot can still be accessed from our main entrance on Eastgate Way. Use Richards Road or Factoria Boulevard and approach from the west. We encourage all visitors to review their route in advance, including public transportation, as some routes may be impacted. Thank you for your patience and support.
Kelly Wittman’s Foster Story: Love, Cats & Community
Kelly Wittman has fostered hundreds of baby cats over the years through Seattle Humane and will be opening her home up to many more this Kitten Season! Kelly’s love for cats started with Sugar, the family feline who grew up with her all the way to high school. After graduating college, Kelly adopted her first kitten from Seattle Humane, and soon after she began volunteering in our adoption department and fostering more kittens.
“I think one of the biggest ways you can help a shelter, whether Seattle Humane or any other, is to foster,” Kelly says. “Second to monetary donations and donating pet supplies and food, fostering has such a huge impact on helping shelters.”
Kelly stepped back from fostering briefly when her children were younger but got the whole family into it again 12 years ago. Six years ago, Kelly joined our board of directors, volunteering even more of her time helping Seattle Humane fulfill our lifesaving mission.
This fantastic feline fosterer recently shared her experience caring for shelter kittens and their moms at her home, where she had a small area converted into a dedicated cat room for her littlest guests. Watch the video here!
Kelly’s story is just one of many we could tell of the 500 foster parents that come together for Seattle Humane’s most vulnerable pets to ensure they get the extra love, attention and care they need to complete their journeys home. Jazz is a fun-loving, 5-year-old Rottweiler mix who has been looking for her new family at Seattle Humane since March. She came to the shelter through a Lifesaver Rescue transfer out of Olympia, where she’d been found as a stray. Jazz loves to play fetch with tennis balls and chew toys, and will then take her favorite toy with her on a nice walk along Seattle Humane’s trails. She loves cuddling with people for pets and belly rubs, and she will roll around when she’s happy. Jazz has gone on many field trips with volunteers and enjoys the great outdoors, especially if she can find some water to play in. She would love to continue hiking the Pacific Northwest with her new family. Due to her long length of stay at Seattle Humane, her new family can name Jazz’s adoption ! Share Jazz with your followers on Facebook and Instagram.

Calling All Animal-Loving People Pleasers!
We're all here at Seattle Humane, but we need people people too! Adoption Support volunteers help adopters and staff with the adoption process by welcoming and engaging with shelter visitors, answering questions and facilitating meet and greets between available pets and potential adopters. We have several weekly shifts available, with an especially high need for dog adoption support on Saturday afternoons. To help you get familiar with our campus and pet handling policies, all Adoption Support volunteers begin training through our Shelter Support and Animal Care roles before working with adopters.
If you love talking to people and want to help them complete their families, head to our website to learn more and get started!
Partnering with Bloodworks NW: Give Blood. Rescue a Human.
Seattle Humane is teaming up with local artist and animal lover Henry and Bloodworks NW as part of their GIVE BLOOD. RESCUE A HUMAN. campaign. The campaign emphasizes the powerful connection between pet lovers and the compassionate and lifesaving act of giving blood.
Earlier this month, thanks to Bloodworks NW and this cool new partnership, Henry created two special murals on Seattle Humane’s campus. Be sure to check them out—one inside our adoption lobby and another on the roll-up door of our Pet Food Bank. The murals capture the joy, love and deep connection we share with our animal companions.
And don't forget that now is a great time to take action and donate blood during the critical summer months!

Guiding Change, Growing Impact: Meet Board Member Kathy Gersch
Seattle Humane has been growing and evolving for more than 125 years to create a more humane world for pets and the people who love them. In order to continue saving and serving animals in need, we are constantly looking at ways to make donations go farther and increase the reach and value of our community programs. All of this change can be scary, but Seattle Humane Board Member Kathy Gersch is quite literally a change expert!
“I do a lot of work in helping organizations grow and change to support ongoing growth and development of their mission,” Kathy says. “That is where I hope to spend a lot of my time.”
