Learn about what's been going on at Seattle Humane

Gunner is Ready To Go Home!

Gunner

When Gunner arrived at Seattle Humane in April from Joint Animal Services, both of his front legs were badly broken after being hit by a car. He had a long recovery ahead of him, but this gentle giant’s sweet spirit never wavered.

With support from the Svanee’s Last Chance Fund, Gunner was referred to a specialist for additional imaging. Our veterinary team decided to keep him splinted for nearly three months, closely monitoring the healing process. It wasn’t easy for a playful pup like Gunner to stay still, but he handled every bandage change and vet visit with patience and resilience. Even while wearing his casts, Gunner stole the show walking the runway at our Tuxes & Tails gala. His moment in the spotlight was a celebration of how far he had come, and a reminder of what is possible with a community of support.

We’re thrilled to share that Gunner is now healed, cast-free and ready to run and play again. Thank you to our incredible Rescue Squad and everyone who made his recovery possible. Because of you, Gunner is healthy, happy and ready for his new home! Learn more about Gunner on our website, or reach out to our Adoptions team at adoption@seattlehumane.org to set up a time to meet him!

Beat the Heat This Summer

It’s hard enough for us humans to keep cool when the summer temps spike, so imagine how hard it is on our pets who have to walk around in a fur coat all day! There are lots of ways to help your fur babies beat the heat, including going for walks early in the morning and later in the evening. And watch out for hot concrete and asphalt, because they can cause severe burns to their paw pads just as easily as they can damage your feet. Did you know the inside temperature of your car can turn deadly in less than 10 minutes? Check out these Hot Weather Resources to make sure this summer is nothing but cool cats, dogs and critters!

Featured Pet: Nado

Featured Pet_Nado1

Nado is a fun-loving, 3-year-old Labrador mix looking for a family at Seattle Humane. He was part of a Wings of Rescue flight out of Los Angeles County during the large wildfires in Januaryhis journey to the Pacific Northwest making room in area shelters to take in displaced pets. Nado is a big dog with an even bigger presence. Nado’s favorite word and preferred activity is BALL. Whether it is fetching it, carrying it or chewing it, Nado is going to find and play with a ball. While he is an energetic boy with a lot of spunk, Nado also enjoys some down time, and has even cuddled on the couch with his foster parent. Nado is looking for a home where he can spend time in the yard playing ball and continue his training. At this time, he would prefer to be your only pet while he takes some time to decompress and enjoy his new family. Share Nado on Facebook and Instagram!

Keeping Pets and People Together in Burien

PSI Clinic 5

Seattle Humane has been extending its healing reach into underserved communities for the past several years with the vital support of a PetSmart Charities Incubator grant, offering vaccine and wellness clinics for the benefit of pets and their people. We recently celebrated a full year of partnership with the Burien Community Center, which opened its doors to our pop-up clinics back in 2024

The animal welfare organizations and community veterinary clinics in our area only meet 12.6% of the need within our community, making these pop-up community clinics an invaluable resource for pet owners. The PetSmart Charities Grant allows us to provide many of the same high-quality services pets receive through our Schuler Family Medical Center while breaking down barriers to access and meeting people where they are in our community.

We served more than 40 dogs and a dozen cats during our most recent pop-up clinic inside the Burien Community Center with critical vaccines, dewormer and flea/tick preventatives, as well as microchipping more than 32 pets, ensuring they can be quickly reunited with their families should they ever become lost.

Ana heard about our pop-up clinic through our media partner, Se Habla Media. She’d received services from Seattle Humane in the past and was happy to be able to bring in her pets for a wellness check and flea/tick treatment.

“I really liked it,” she said. “They are really friendly, and they serve you with great patience.”

Beti learned about the clinic while picking up food and supplies during Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank walk-up hours at our Eastside campus. She brought her dogs, Chico and Brownie, to the clinic for their annual vaccinations and had Chico signed up to receive his neuter surgery. All 14 pets signed up for spay/neuter surgeries had their operations covered by the PetSmart Charities Incubator Grant.

In addition to veterinary care, Seattle Humane also distributed 300 pounds of pet food.

“Many clients shared how much this clinic means to them, especially during a time when accessing veterinary care and supplies is often expensive and out of reach,” said Seattle Humane Veterinary Social Worker Kaitlyn O’Neel. “The Burien Community Center has proven to be an ideal location for this work: central, welcoming and deeply rooted in the neighborhoods we serve. As we celebrate one full year of clinics in Burien, we are filled with gratitude for our volunteers, PetSmart Charities and the entire community. Together, we’re building a more equitable model of care, one that centers access, compassion and trust!”

Foster Spotlight: Fostering is Better Together

Help Pets Find Their People! Volunteer With Our Adoptions Team

Adoptions Volunteer

Our busy Adoptions team is still seeking volunteers to help them connect pets with their new families! We’re in need of Greeters to welcome guests to the shelter, as well as Adoption Support volunteers, who assist with the adoption process by answering questions and facilitating meet and greets between available pets and potential adopters. Whether you’re a cat person or a dog person (or both!), we have several weekly shifts available Wednesdays through Sundays. To help you get familiar with our campus and pet handling policies, all Adoption Support volunteers begin training through our Shelter Support and Animal Care roles before working with adopters.

Welcoming a new pet to the family can be a joyful and exciting experience, and Adoption volunteers get to witness it firsthand. If you’d like to be part of that, head to our website to learn more and get started!
