May eNews | National Rescue Dog Day & Another Successful Tuxes & Tails Event!

Learn about what's been going on at Seattle Humane

The Joy of Rescue

Joy of Rescue

Today, May 20, is National Rescue Dog Day, a day that was created to bring awareness to the millions of resilient and loving dogs in shelters around the country, and to encourage adoption.

Last month, we took in several chihuahuas from our friends at Onalaska Farm Sanctuary, who rescued them from a puppy mill following a heartbreaking animal cruelty case. Sadly, not all of the dogs survived. The survivors were quickly moved to safety, and out of caution, were placed in our quarantine for over a week with close medical monitoring to make sure they were healthy and stable.

We’re happy to report that they have all been adopted and are now snuggled up in safe and loving homes. The resilience of these tiny dogs is incredible, and it’s been inspiring to watch their personalities shine as they regained health and confidence.

We’re so grateful these pups were able to find homes, and hope that all our amazing rescue dogs are given a second chance to grow with love in new homes. Visit our website to meet all of the dogs (or cats and critters) deserving of rescue!

Tuxes & Tails Was the Paw-ty of the Year!

Tuxes25

Our Rescue Squad wagged those paddles and helped us exceed our goal and raise over $1.6 million in support of pets and the people who love them during our 2025 Tuxes & Tails gala last night. While the paw-ty is over, we’re still celebrating!

These critical funds will allow Seattle Humane to continue to serve almost 100,000 pets and their people each year through programs that save lives and keep families together. We are so grateful to our Rescue Squad for coming together to support our work and mission, helping those most vulnerable. Together, we are caring for pets, their people and each other.

If you were unable to join us, you can still experience the fun by checking out this highlight reel! And be sure to mark your calendars now for next year’s event on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

There’s still time to make a gift in support of our furry friends. Thank you for helping us create a more humane world for pets and their people!

We Are Open During Construction!

Seattle Humane remains open and ready to serve our community during ongoing construction along Eastgate Way. The parking lot can still be accessed from our main entrance on Eastgate Way. Use Richards Road and approach from the west. We encourage all visitors to review their route in advance, including public transportation, as some routes may be impacted. Thank you for your patience and support.

Featured Pet: Fia

Fia

Fia is a smart and cuddly pit bull mix who has been looking for a family at Seattle Humane since late December. Three-year-old Fia has enjoyed time in foster homes where she loves cuddling with people on the couch and binge-watching TV or taking a quick power nap. Fia has also spent time living with older children while in foster. She enjoys playing tug and fetch out in the yard, as well as going on nice walks and taking in new smells. She is an energetic and playful gal who is a volunteer favorite when it comes to going on field trips! Fia loves people so much, she prefers to be the only canine companion in the home. She would love to have a home with a yard and a family willing to continue her training. Due to her long stay at Seattle Humane, her new family can name her adoption fee!

Learn more about Fia here! You can also share Fia with your followers on Facebook and Instagram.

Saving Lives with Svanee’s Last Chance Fund

Castners May eNews

Pet owners frequently come to Seattle Humane with furry family members in need of emergency medical intervention, often after exhausting all other options and finding themselves unable to cover the cost of the lifesaving care their pets need. We are eternally grateful to long-time supporters Svanee and Russ Castner for stepping up for those most vulnerable pets and creating a dedicated fund to help cover the costs of urgent but treatable medical conditions.

Svanee’s Last Chance Fund not only ensures we have the resources to help community pets needing emergency surgeries and specialized medical services but also helps offset the operational costs of treating Seattle Humane shelter pets with emergent medical conditions inside our Schuler Family Medical Center.

Burt and his littermates arrived at Seattle Humane in February through an emergency transfer from another shelter after being diagnosed with parvovirus, a gastrointestinal virus that is often fatal without medical intervention. Svanee’s Last Chance Fund was activated and provided additional funds to support the intensive care these puppies needed to survive.

Through amazing supporters like the Castners and a dedicated team of staff and volunteers all coming together to save and serve pets in need, Seattle Humane is able to respond to even more requests from those who need it most!

Humane Teen Club Applications Open

The window for Humane Teen Club applications is now open! Humane Teen Club is for animal advocates who are 13-17 years old. During the school year, members meet two Saturdays per month to learn about operations at Seattle Humane and explore a variety of animal welfare-related topics. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible for select volunteer positions at Seattle Humane. For more information and to apply, visit the Youth Programs page on our website. The deadline to apply is Friday, August 22.

Foster Spotlight: Elliot

Foster Spotlight_ Elliot

When Elliott would get lost in a crowd as a child, all her mother had to do was look for the nearest dog. Now, when a dog needs a kennel break, they just have to look for the nearest Elliott. El began fostering with Seattle Humane in October 2024, and she is currently caring for adoptable Elodie Grace. Learn more about our May Foster Spotlight here!

Seeking Pet Food Bank Volunteers!

Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank collects and distributes pet food donations to pet owners in the community, providing nearly 1 million meals each year. Volunteers play an essential role in ensuring these services remain accessible, and we're currently seeking more volunteers to join the Pet Food Bank team. We have a variety of positions available, including making deliveries, packing orders, or helping clients during our busy walk-up hours, with an especially high need on Thursday afternoons. For more information, visit our website or email volunteers@seattlehumane.org.
