When 8-year-old Zoey (pictured above) arrived at Seattle Humane just before Thanksgiving last year, her sweet, gentle nature made her an instant favorite among our staff and volunteers. This easygoing senior pittie mix loved going on walks, playing fetch in the yard and cuddling with people.
Despite her lovable personality, Zoey spent over 130 days waiting to be adopted. Unfortunately, older pets like Zoey often have to wait much longer in shelters. According to the ASPCA, only 25% of senior dogs in shelters find homes. Their age, potential medical needs and the time and financial commitment required can cause adopters to pass them by, no matter how affectionate, housebroken or calm they may be.
