| Saving Lives With a New Treatment There may be nothing scarier to pop up in an animal shelter than a positive case of parvovirus. This deadly and highly contagious virus is often diagnosed in our most vulnerable pets–puppies who are lacking in vaccinations or who are too young to have been fully vaccinated against parvovirus.
Until very recently, the only treatment was supportive care and addressing the issues that arise from parvovirus, without having a targeted treatment to help these dogs fight back. So, our amazing veterinary team was more than a little excited when the American Veterinary Medical Association published a report about a new drug treatment for parvovirus called Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA) that did just that!
Seattle Humane had the good fortune to recently acquire a small supply of CPMA when it was made available to shelters at a special price. It didn’t take long for our team inside the Schuler Family Medical Center to get their chance to put this new treatment to the test. Shortly after we received this new drug, a litter of three parvo-positive puppies were brought to us–six of their littermates had already succumbed to this terrible virus.
Named after Dungeons & Dragons characters, Neptulon, Ner Zhul and Lich King were the first to receive the CPMA treatment here at Seattle Humane, but they still had a difficult quest ahead of them. They were also provided with IV catheters with fluids to keep them hydrated, multiple oral and intravenous medications, and syringe feeding since they weren’t eating on their own.
These resilient puppies survived, thanks to the incredible care they received from our veterinary team and this new CPMA treatment, and they were cleared in late July to complete their journeys home to loving families!
“Lich King, now known as Diego, is perfect,” his new mom says. “He had his appointment with our local veterinary and another set of shots recently. The vet said he’s very healthy. He is doing very well with our dog and cat, as well.”
This is just one example of the many ways your generous gifts to Seattle Humane make a lasting impact on the pets in our care. We are so thankful for our amazing Rescue Squad and your support of our lifesaving mission, which makes it possible for us to continue innovating and finding new ways to save and serve pets in need. More than a Shelter: Growing Spay & Neuter Services Seattle Humane continues to innovate the way we save and serve pets, and that not only means updating our standards of care but also enhancing the services we’ve been providing for decades to reach even more pets in need of our help.
The Seattle Humane Spay & Neuter Clinic opened to the public in 1978, offering reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats of low-income families in our community. This program has grown exponentially over nearly 50 years, particularly when we opened our new state-of-the-art veterinary clinic in 2017.
Between our own shelter pets and our community clients, the number of spay and neuter surgeries our skilled veterinary team performs inside the Schuler Family Medical Center has increased year over year. Our team, with the assistance of fourth-year students from WSU College of Veterinary Medicine as part of their training, performed more than 7,000 spay and neuters in fiscal year 2024. We are on target to break that record by more than a thousand surgeries this year!
Seattle Humane is not innovating in a vacuum and continues to rely on our animal welfare partners to help us adopt the latest best practices and make improvements wherever possible.
We were delighted to welcome the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) training team in September, their visit made possible by the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative. Our veterinary team worked with ASNA representatives to evaluate clinic layout and flow, with the goal of being able to serve even more pets as efficiently as possible while never compromising our high-quality standards.
We are very grateful to have had this opportunity and look forward to increasing our capacity for care with their help and continuing to do our part to reduce the homeless pet population. Daisy Duck is an energetic and playful 1 1/2-year-old Anatolian shepherd mix who has been looking for her new family at Seattle Humane since late January.
Daisy loves going on long walks, hikes, sunbathing and playing with all of her dog friends here at the shelter. Daisy Duck does much better when she’s around other dogs and would benefit from living with a confident and playful canine in her new home. Her play style can be very rambunctious at times, and she doesn’t always know when her friends need a time out.
She would benefit from ongoing training, which Seattle Humane can provide through our many public dog training courses. It’s important for young dogs like Daisy to have lots of physical and mental enrichment in their lives to help them from becoming bored and to encourage positive behavior in the home. Daisy also enjoys cuddling and will seek lots of affection from people once she’s relaxed. Daisy does well on car rides and walks well on a leash, which she does frequently when she goes on day trips with our amazing volunteers. Daisy Duck will do best with a family willing to give her additional time to settle into her new home and with a regular routine.
A generous donor with a soft spot for Anatolian shepherds has sponsored Daisy Duck’s adoption! You can help by sharing her posts on Facebook or Instagram!
