[URGENT] Cat Rescue Alert: Your Support Is Needed

Content warning: animal cruelty

Give Monthly

Dear aze,

You may have seen in the news that Jefferson County authorities are investigating another animal cruelty and hoarding case involving more than 100 cats in the rural area of Brinnon. Many of the cats have medical issues that need urgent treatment, including young kittens who are especially vulnerable to disease and parasites.

Seattle Humane is stepping in to support our rescue partners who initially took in the cats and kittens. This week we will be taking in more than 20 adult cats and more than a dozen kittens. Every one of them will receive the food, shelter and expert medical care they deserve thanks to supporters like you.

Seattle Humane leans on our extraordinary community to save and serve our community’s most vulnerable pets—and we are hoping we can come together to help the voiceless victims of the Jefferson County animal hoarding investigation in our care. Please make an urgent gift now to help cover the specialized medical care many of these cats will need over the coming weeks. A gift of any amount will go so far in their care and recovery!

As always, we will keep our community updated on the health and availability of these cats as they recover. I encourage you to follow our social media pages for the most recent news and updates on our shelter pets. Thank you, truly, for being someone we can turn to in critical moments like this.

Gratefully,

Chase Huffman

Paws for Estate Planning

Your love for pets can live on fur-ever

Give Monthly
NEPAW e-mail header

This National Estate Planning Awareness Week (NEPAW), we’re offering every member of our community a vital resource to ensure your pets and loved ones are cared for—no matter what.

This week offers a unique opportunity to have meaningful conversations with your family about estate planning and planned giving (don’t worry—we promise it’s easier than it sounds). These conversations are surprisingly positive and it feels great to have peace of mind about the future.

To help you break the estate-planning ice, here’s a checklist of questions to get you started:

☑️ Guardianship: Who would we want to care for our children and/or pets?

☑️ Financial Management: Who would we want to help manage our finances? Who would be our financial power of attorney?

☑️ Health Decisions: Does our medical power of attorney know our health concerns and wishes?

☑️ Veterinary Care: Is our pet(s) medical history and veterinarian’s information accounted for?

☑️ Readiness and Willingness: Are the chosen family members or friends aware of these roles and willing to take them on?

☑️ Legacy: What impactful causes (like saving pets in need) do we want to support through our legacy?’

These conversations can be complex, but we offer this free online service to make creating your plan quick, free and straightforward.

By creating an estate plan, you're not only securing your pet's future; you're also building a legacy of compassion. With an optional legacy gift to Seattle Humane, you can ensure that pets in need will always have a haven—powering our adoption services, pet food bank, support for pet owners, low-cost spay/neuter surgeries, wellness exams, education for all ages, and more.

I encourage you to start the conversation with your loved ones this NEPAW and build a legacy for pets that lasts fur-ever.

Sincerely,

Emergency Aid: Help Hurricane Helene and Milton Survivors Find Safety at Seattle Humane

Send Urgent Help to Hurricane Survivors

Give Monthly

Dear aze,

Hurricanes Helene and Milton have been devastating not only for the people living in their path, but for abandoned or stray dogs and cats as well. A rescue transfer of these vulnerable survivors, who were already in shelters before the hurricanes hit, just arrived at Seattle Humane. More pets seeking safety, care and comfort may be on the way.

By bringing these rescues safely to Seattle Humane, we’re also making room for newly displaced and injured pets in shelters at the heart of the disaster areas, giving them a chance to be reunited with their families.

These storm-battered pets are in urgent need of medical care, food and shelter. Seattle Humane is committed to providing them with the expert care they need to heal and begin their journey to finding loving homes.

We’re reaching out to our compassionate community to ask for your urgent help. Please consider making a donation today to support the care of these hurricane survivors. Your gift will provide essential medical treatment, food, and a safe place for these pets as they recover. Every dollar makes a difference in their journey to health and happiness.

We will continue to update our community on pets as they arrive at Seattle Humane to heal and find loving families. Thank you for being part of our lifesaving work—together, we can make a profound difference for these animals who need us now more than ever.

With Gratitude,

Chase Huffman

October eNews | Sending Parvovirus Packing + Save the Date for Tuxes & Tails

Saving Lives With a New Treatment

Saving Lives With a New Treatment

There may be nothing scarier to pop up in an animal shelter than a positive case of parvovirus. This deadly and highly contagious virus is often diagnosed in our most vulnerable pets–puppies who are lacking in vaccinations or who are too young to have been fully vaccinated against parvovirus.

Until very recently, the only treatment was supportive care and addressing the issues that arise from parvovirus, without having a targeted treatment to help these dogs fight back. So, our amazing veterinary team was more than a little excited when the American Veterinary Medical Association published a report about a new drug treatment for parvovirus called Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA) that did just that!

Seattle Humane had the good fortune to recently acquire a small supply of CPMA when it was made available to shelters at a special price. It didn’t take long for our team inside the Schuler Family Medical Center to get their chance to put this new treatment to the test. Shortly after we received this new drug, a litter of three parvo-positive puppies were brought to us–six of their littermates had already succumbed to this terrible virus.

Named after Dungeons & Dragons characters, Neptulon, Ner Zhul and Lich King were the first to receive the CPMA treatment here at Seattle Humane, but they still had a difficult quest ahead of them. They were also provided with IV catheters with fluids to keep them hydrated, multiple oral and intravenous medications, and syringe feeding since they weren’t eating on their own.

These resilient puppies survived, thanks to the incredible care they received from our veterinary team and this new CPMA treatment, and they were cleared in late July to complete their journeys home to loving families!

“Lich King, now known as Diego, is perfect,” his new mom says. “He had his appointment with our local veterinary and another set of shots recently. The vet said he’s very healthy. He is doing very well with our dog and cat, as well.”

This is just one example of the many ways your generous gifts to Seattle Humane make a lasting impact on the pets in our care. We are so thankful for our amazing Rescue Squad and your support of our lifesaving mission, which makes it possible for us to continue innovating and finding new ways to save and serve pets in need.

More than a Shelter: Growing Spay & Neuter Services

Seattle Humane continues to innovate the way we save and serve pets, and that not only means updating our standards of care but also enhancing the services we’ve been providing for decades to reach even more pets in need of our help.

The Seattle Humane Spay & Neuter Clinic opened to the public in 1978, offering reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats of low-income families in our community. This program has grown exponentially over nearly 50 years, particularly when we opened our new state-of-the-art veterinary clinic in 2017.

Between our own shelter pets and our community clients, the number of spay and neuter surgeries our skilled veterinary team performs inside the Schuler Family Medical Center has increased year over year. Our team, with the assistance of fourth-year students from WSU College of Veterinary Medicine as part of their training, performed more than 7,000 spay and neuters in fiscal year 2024. We are on target to break that record by more than a thousand surgeries this year!

Seattle Humane is not innovating in a vacuum and continues to rely on our animal welfare partners to help us adopt the latest best practices and make improvements wherever possible.

We were delighted to welcome the ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (ASNA) training team in September, their visit made possible by the Northern Tier Shelter Initiative. Our veterinary team worked with ASNA representatives to evaluate clinic layout and flow, with the goal of being able to serve even more pets as efficiently as possible while never compromising our high-quality standards.

We are very grateful to have had this opportunity and look forward to increasing our capacity for care with their help and continuing to do our part to reduce the homeless pet population. Learn more about the Seattle Humane Spay & Neuter Clinic here.

Let's Find Daisy Duck a Family!

Daisy Duck is an energetic and playful 1 1/2-year-old Anatolian shepherd mix who has been looking for her new family at Seattle Humane since late January.

Daisy loves going on long walks, hikes, sunbathing and playing with all of her dog friends here at the shelter. Daisy Duck does much better when she’s around other dogs and would benefit from living with a confident and playful canine in her new home. Her play style can be very rambunctious at times, and she doesn’t always know when her friends need a time out.

She would benefit from ongoing training, which Seattle Humane can provide through our many public dog training courses. It’s important for young dogs like Daisy to have lots of physical and mental enrichment in their lives to help them from becoming bored and to encourage positive behavior in the home. Daisy also enjoys cuddling and will seek lots of affection from people once she’s relaxed. Daisy does well on car rides and walks well on a leash, which she does frequently when she goes on day trips with our amazing volunteers. Daisy Duck will do best with a family willing to give her additional time to settle into her new home and with a regular routine.

A generous donor with a soft spot for Anatolian shepherds has sponsored Daisy Duck’s adoption! You can help by sharing her posts on Facebook or Instagram!
