Summertime Pet Precautions

Summer fun is finally here! The temperatures are soaring, the days are stretching out, and adventures with your best friends are calling. Before you hit the road or hit the trails, we've got a few hot tips to keep your summer sizzlin' and safe!

Did you know your car can reach a sweltering 114 degrees in less than 10 minutes? Yes, even in the shade, and yes, even in Seattle! Leaving your furry friend in the car, even for just a minute, can be too long. For more pets & hot weather advice, check out our website.

Another tip for those summer road trips: keep your cats in carriers, dogs in harnesses or travel crates, and critters in their travel carriers. In case of an unexpected scare (hello, 18-wheeler horns!), this keeps everyone safe. You can find more great travel tips in the Resources section of our website.

If you're hitting the trails with your four-legged pals, remember to pack:
  • Plenty of water and a bowl
  • Tasty treats and food
  • Cooling bandanas to beat the heat

  • Keep an eye out for sneaky plants, snakes, ticks and other critters that might harm your buddy. Summer is for fun, not emergency vet visits!

Have a paw-some and safe summer!

    Featured Pet: Tiger

Tiger is a 2-year-old American bully/Rottweiler mix who has been looking for a family at Seattle Humane since December. He's very sweet and also very big, which makes finding a home where he fits more difficult. He loves taking his candy cane toy for walks, getting lots of belly rubs and taking an appropriate amount of naps every day. Tiger has played with other dogs at Seattle Humane and prospective adopters can arrange a meeting between Tiger and their resident doggos with an adoption advisor.

Learn more about Tiger and help him find his family by sharing some of his antics on Facebook or Instagram!

    Don’t Sweat It, Donate It!

Do you have a long to-do list this summer? Does it include figuring out what to do with that car that’s been sitting in your driveway for months? Don’t sweat it, donate it! Seattle Humane can use the proceeds to help us continue to save lives and complete families in our community.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Call 855-293-PETS or complete the online donation form.

    2. Schedule your free pick-up: our charity partner will arrange to have a licensed tow company pick up your vehicle at a convenient time–all at no cost to you.

    3. Receive your tax receipt: when the vehicle sells, you will receive a thank-you letter and any documents you need for your tax-deductible gift.

More Than a Shelter: Sharing our Expertise

Seattle Humane’s Dog Training team had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a recent “Pups at the Park” event at St. Edward’s State Park. Farrah Branson, Animal Training Manager, and Cathy Madson, Dog Training Instructor, shared information about dog training at Seattle Humane and event participants had the chance to learn two fun dog training skills, hand targeting and spin, with expert dog trainer Cathy and gain great tips and tricks. St. Edward’s State Park offered the perfect backdrop for a relaxed afternoon that included a variety of delicious hot dogs from Dante’s Inferno Dogs and a yummy pup cup for each good dog, and they were ALL very good!
