A Second Chance for Kingsley

The shelter system can be an incredibly stressful transition for any pet, but it was especially difficult for Kingsley. He’d recently been the victim of an unprovoked dog attack before being surrendered, and he was less than thrilled to suddenly find himself in an unfamiliar place surrounded by canine strangers. His reactivity toward other dogs and his textbook pit bull looks meant Kingsley received little adoption interest.

But Kingsley’s sweet nature captured the hearts of many staff members, and he was eventually lucky enough to get out of the shelter and into a loving foster home, where he made quick friends with the resident youths. Kingsley waited a very long time to find a family that could provide him with the setup he needed to be successful—a quiet neighborhood with few dogs he’d likely encounter—but he finally made that wonderful connection back in February. And they also had kids for him to cuddle with on the couch, which was something he’d grown quite accustomed to in his foster home.

Kingsley’s dad says this good boy has adapted well to his new home and family and remains playful, cuddly and, most importantly, happy!

We see hundreds of pets every year just like Kingsley. They arrive stressed and unsure of their future, but thanks to compassionate friends like you, they get everything they need to thrive in a loving home—for as long as they need it. We are grateful for your partnership in saving lives and completing families!

Open Your Heart & Home to Fostering Large Dogs

Shelters across the country are full of large dogs, and the longer they stay there, the more stressed they become. Unfortunately, large dogs spend the longest time in the shelter system. While adoption is the goal, the next best solution to reducing stress is getting them into loving foster homes. Seattle Humane is looking for foster parents who can give some of our large (45 pounds+) dogs a break! They’ll feel better and start to show what they’re really like in a loving home.

You can help them build a normal routine to set them up for success with their families, document their likes, dislikes and needs, and capture lots of adorable photos and videos to help us attract the right adopters. Bonus: all supplies, medications, food and more are covered by Seattle Humane! Afraid you might fall in love and not want to let that doggo go? Foster fails are successes in our book!

The pawty of the year is sold out but you can still support Seattle Humane by making a gift in support of our programs that serve pets and the people who love them! As our largest fundraiser of the year, your support of the 2024 Tuxes & Tails gala powers the work we do to care for pets in need throughout the year. As the costs of caring for pets at Seattle Humane surge, we need your help to close a critical funding gap. You can help us support pets for a lifetime, even those who never come to the shelter.

Make a gift today by visiting TuxesandTails.org. Please email tuxes@seattlehumane.org to be added to the wait list for tickets. Our team will be in touch if tickets become available.

More than a Shelter: Dog Bite Prevention

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs in the United States every year, and one in five of these people will require medical attention. As we head towards the summer—the time of year most dog bites occur—Seattle Humane’s Animal Training Manager, Farrah Branson CPDT-KA shares four strategies and resources to keep your pet and family safe.

Learn about dog body language. We often miss the early warning signs that a dog is going to bite and only take notice once a bite has happened. Most dogs will give ample warning signs and look for other ways to resolve upsets prior to biting. Learn more about dog body language in this video.

Teach your children about dog safety. Teaching kids to be gentle when touching dogs—not hugging or hanging onto them—is just as important as teaching them not to approach strange dogs in public without asking first. Learn more about dog safety in this kid-friendly video.

Keep dogs on leash while outside your home. Not only do leashes keep dogs safe from dangers like cars, but they also help keep children safe! In the Pacific Northwest, we are blessed with many wonderful off-leash dog parks and Sniffspots for private play so your dog can get out their zoomies!

Start socializing puppies as young as possible! Socializing puppies to the world around them is more important than most people realize. Puppies under 16 weeks old are in what is commonly referred to as the “critical socialization” period. During this period, everything they experience becomes generalized, which is a fancy way of saying normal! Seattle Humane offers a comprehensive puppy program that includes high-quality puppy socialization sessions and classes for puppies of all ages!

Featured Pet: Tiger

This sweet boy is turning two years old on May 1 and would love to celebrate the big day with his new family. Tiger is 50% American bully, 50% rottweiler and 100% a good boy. He loves to be with his people, getting in lots of good chewing and a couple cuddle breaks. Tiger also does pretty well stomping the yard with other big dogs or flying solo. Catch the eye of the Tiger here at Seattle Humane!

Estate Tax Changes & You: Learn from Experts

Big estate tax changes are coming. Starting at midnight on December 31, 2025, lifetime estate and gift tax exemption thresholds are set to be cut in half–potentially leading to a sharp jump in some estates' tax liability. Fortunately, there is still time to prepare for these significant changes!

Together with our partners at Schwab Charitable, Seattle Humane is hosting an in-person, free informational event at the shelter about these upcoming changes on April 22. In a panel discussion with Schwab’s experts, you’ll learn a few possible options for reducing your estate’s tax burden, including how some of those options could translate into a huge impact for the causes you care about most. This is a great opportunity to get insider knowledge on these significant tax changes, start to make a plan for you and your family, and enjoy a night at the shelter in good company! Heavy appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

We expect seats to fill quickly, so RSVP today! Learn more and RSVP for this free event, Monday, April 22, 5-7 p.m., here.
