Give Monthly Magical Meeko The transformation we see in pets under our care is nothing short of magical. Sometimes it takes intensive medical treatment, or an individualized behavioral plan. Often, comfort and a safe space to heal provided by staff, volunteers and foster families is all that’s needed.     For cat Meeko, it was both. Meeko came to Seattle Humane through a Lifesaver Rescue transfer with conjunctivitis, an ear infection and painful scabs due to flea allergy dermatitis. Meeko was suffering, but that didn’t stop him from being a total lovebug—relishing the belly rubs he received from staff. Meeko found a safe space to heal in a foster home before he caught the eye of his adopter, Kaitlyn.    Meeko's time in foster helped get his dermatitis under control and he has become quite the fluffy and handsome boy, even though we're still working on figuring out all his skin sensitivities. He's adjusted to life with two BIG brothers (8- and 9-year-old doodles), is confident, affectionate and even proven he's able to keep up with them on hikes—it's hard to imagine how we thought our furry family was complete before him. –Kaitlyn    It’s a joy to see pets like Meeko relaxed and pain-free after much-needed veterinary intervention. And ultimately, happy in their new home. This magic, which we witness daily, happens thanks to animal lovers like you! Show your love for your sweetheart by sending them a special Valentine’s e-card featuring our shelter pets with a donation of $5 or more.   Feeling crappy about Valentine’s Day? This might cheer you up.   For a $20 donation, we'll write the name of your ex on a doggie poop bag or a piece of paper and put it into a litter box. You choose! Let’s help you close the lid on that relationship knowing our furry residents will shower them with the karma they deserve this Valentine's Day.   Featured Pet: Meet Ronald! Ronald is a young and adventurous doggo who can go on a two-mile hike and still have energy for a game of fetch. He's very smart and playful, though he doesn't vibe with every dog he meets. He's only a little over a year old though, so he has lots of time to work on his dog manners in a loving home.   Ronald’s adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor.   Exciting Animal Welfare Advocacy Updates! Here's How You Can Help.  Seattle Humane and the ASPCA have been working together on a new bill focused on limiting the amount of pet deposits that can be charged and prohibiting pet rent and pet fees for a new or existing tenant. Pet-inclusive housing is a priority given the recent rise in surrenders to shelters across the region due to financial insecurity and housing barriers. A rise in owner surrenders is leading to shelter overcrowding across Washington. Removing these housing barriers for pet owners is an important step to ensuring all families can experience the many benefits of pet ownership and creating more equitable, pet-inclusive housing and keeping families–and their pets–together.    SB 6064 would reasonably limit pet deposits to $150, prohibit additional pet fees of any kind, and prohibit additional pet rents. The co-sponsors are Senator Drew Hansen and Senator Patty Kuderer, and the bill is receiving bipartisan interest. SB 6064 would have a positive impact in communities across the state, benefiting the thousands of renters who face the impossible challenge of deciding to keep their pets or have a roof over their heads, and in turn help mitigate the rise in owner surrenders leading to shelter overcrowding.    We hope you will show your support of SB 6064 by using this social media toolkit and sharing this SB 6064 Fact Sheet with your networks, inviting them to also support. Please join the ASPCA, Seattle Humane and other animal welfare organizations for a Washington Animal Advocacy Meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23 using this Zoom link. We will keep the Advocacy page on our website updated with additional ways for you to show your support.   In addition, Seattle Humane also supports the ASPCA’s efforts to introduce a bill to expand access to veterinary telemedicine. Amidst a veterinary shortage and the challenges many residents face in accessing veterinary care for their pets, we need every tool in the toolkit to ensure pets receive care when they need it. The ASPCA is working with Representative Amy Walen, a state leader in animal welfare, on the legislature's next steps on this important issue. Please join us in thanking Representative Walen for her outstanding leadership on animal welfare and her commitment to improving veterinary access in Washington state. Let's show our collective support and appreciation for her efforts to ensure every pet receives care. You can call Representative Walen at (360) 786-7848 to express your gratitude and voice your support for veterinary telemedicine and her continued advocacy in this area.    Thank you and we look forward to creating a more humane world together!    Welcome Dr. Cherice Roth  We are excited to have recently welcomed Dr. Cherice Roth to the Seattle Humane Board of Directors. Dr. Roth is currently the Chief Veterinary Officer of Digital Pet Health for Mars Veterinary Health, as well as Lead Medical Advisor for KeraVetBio. In addition to serving on the board at Seattle Humane, she is on the Board of Chief Veterinary Medical Officers (BCVMO) and Wallace Medical Concern. A graduate of Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Roth also holds a master’s degree in Biochemistry. She is a published author and when not working or writing, you can find her in the woods of Oregon or at the “Rothling Ranch” with her critters, sons and husband.   Foster Spotlight: Tiffany Karam Tiffany Karam started fostering with Seattle Humane in 2019. In that time, Tiffany and her family have fostered over 20 dogs and puppies! We’re recognizing Tiffany this month because we appreciate how patient, compassionate and dedicated she is as a foster parent. Tiffany reliably gravitates towards medium-large sized dogs looking for foster. Large adult dogs are known to have some of the longest stays in the shelter system. There is no shortage of large dogs needing foster care, so we’re eternally grateful for foster parents that open their home to them, like Tiffany. Learn more about Tiffany and her work to help shelter pets blossom.    What Will Your Legacy Be? It’s a new year! If one of your resolutions for 2024 is to take care of the people, pets and causes you love most, one easy way to do that is to create a will that ensures peace of mind and that your wishes are honored. As a way to say “thank you” for all you do for pets in need, Seattle Humane is providing our community access to a free estate planning tool from FreeWill. At Seattle Humane, we offer a large variety of positive reinforcement-based training classes for dog owners in the Greater Seattle area. Our classes were expertly crafted by a leader in the field of Dog Behavior and Training using the most current science-based training methods.    Our family-friendly program includes classes for dogs of all ages, including a comprehensive program for puppies. We offer specialty classes for dogs with challenging behaviors such as reactivity and anxiety. For owners looking to level up their training game, we offer advanced classes, like the ability to receive your Canine Good Citizen certification. In addition to our group training classes, we offer workshops and seminars in a variety of high-interest topics for dog owners.
