Happy tails to Maxine (left) and Nala (right)!

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog month, and we are celebrating by sharing the joyful news of two long overdue adoptions! After over a combined 1,000 days in our care, Maxine and Nala found the families and love they deserve.

Maxine became a social media celebrity during her time at Seattle Humane with her affinity for chasing tennis balls, knowing so many tricks and all of the cute faces she makes with her gentle, brown eyebrows. Nala wasn’t a fan of the limelight and preferred keeping her head down in her foster home, but her story still crossed state lines and caught the eye of her human all the way in Montana.

At Seattle Humane, pets stay with us until they are adopted—no matter how long it takes. We believe every animal deserves a chance for a loving family. Your support and the passion of our volunteers and staff means the world to pets like Nala and Maxine. Thank you!

Want to keep the good vibes going? Here are three ways you can celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog month:

1. Raise awareness! Share on social media to let others know what significance this month has and how they can help by adopting, volunteering or donating to a local shelter.

2. Send some love to a shelter dog by shopping our Amazon Wishlist or Chewy Wishlist.

3. Of course, the best way to celebrate National Adopt a Shelter Dog month is to head to Seattle Humane and meet your next furry BFF.

Featured Pet: Gigi

A shy girl at first, Gigi is a sweet, playful pup who has been waiting too long to find her family. Gigi is nervous around new people but once she becomes your friend, get ready for lots of snuggles and playing!

Gigi is a pro at playing fetch and tug with her people. She also knows quite a few cues, including sit, find it, down and go to bed, and she enjoys learning new things. If you're looking for a smart, affectionate and active gal to shake things up, go with Gigi!

More Than a Shelter: Breaking Down Barriers to Veterinary Care

Senior pup Cowboy receives an exam last month from Seattle Humane’s Vice President of Veterinary Services Dr. Jessica Reed at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center.

American households today have more pets than children and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, most dog and cat owners consider their pets members of the family. Yet for many, veterinary care is simply out of reach. In fact, one in four pet owners experience barriers to veterinary care when—or where—they need it.

At Seattle Humane we believe that people and their pets deserve access to veterinary care. Our Community Medicine program provides affordable and accessible wellness care, vaccinations and microchips to members of our community. We offer regular Wellness Clinic appointments to support pets and pet parents in need of these services at our Bellevue campus and pop-up clinics within the community.

Does your pet companion need care? Schedule a wellness exam for your pet at our Bellevue campus and learn more about upcoming pop-up clinics hosted by Seattle Humane in your community.

PUPP Act: Making a difference for unhoused people and their pet companions

Neither the size of your paycheck nor the place you live determines your ability to love and care for an animal. Above all else, companion animals need devotion. The Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act of 2023, or HR 3957, will create a $5 million federal fund from fiscal years 2024-2028 for providers of emergency and permanent supportive housing to accommodate companion animals and keep pet families together in circumstances of homelessness.

Seattle Humane supports this bipartisan effort and today, we call upon our Rescue Squad to email and call your local representative to urge them to cosponsor the PUPP Act. Below is draft language you can personalize in your message. Thank you for joining us in support of the PUPP Act!

Dear REPRESENTATIVE NAME:

I was so pleased to see the bipartisan Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act (H.R. 3957) introduced earlier this summer by Jason Crow (D-CO), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Nancy Mace (R-SC). As your constituent and animal welfare advocate, I write to ask you to cosponsor the PUPP Act today. This is an incredibly important piece of legislation aimed at keeping pets with the people who love them, especially during times of housing transition and insecurity.

The number of homeless families, veterans and other Americans has increased drastically, jumping 20 percent between 2020 and 2021. Adding to their trauma and stress, many of these people often face an impossible choice - accept available shelter or face losing their beloved pets due to the lack of pet-friendly interim and permanent housing options. The emotional well-being that pets bring to people in crisis cannot be overstated. For unhoused people, their pets provide companionship, comfort and a sense of security.

As a Seattle Humane supporter, I believe in the human-animal bond and the PUPP Act would help address a root problem leading to pets being surrendered to shelters in our region. I hope you will choose to join your colleagues in bipartisan support of the PUPP Act.

Thank you for your consideration and for all that you do for our community.

Sincerely,
YOUR NAME
