Because we're always bringing in at-risk pets from shelters in Washington and across the country, we knew we couldn't literally clear the shelter, but that didn't stop us from trying. An astounding 528 cats, dogs and critters found families during August’s Clear the Shelters campaign. Holy meow-ly! Thank you to everyone who helped us Clear the Shelters, either by adopting a new family member or making a gift in support of pets and the people who love them. And thank you to our amazing team of staff and volunteers for making our lifesaving work possible. Aw-doption Update We found the picture of kitty Skeeter (who now goes by Wes) and his big sister June wrapped in each other’s arms purr-ticularly cute. When you work in animal welfare, sometimes you can’t help but take your work home with you! A Seattle Humane shelter care supervisor was heading home one day when she saw a tiny kitten on the side of the road near a shooting range in rural King County. We entered Skeeter into our system, but she brought him into her home. After a short time fostering Skeeter, she pulled the trigger and adopted this little guy. He now goes by Wes and is quite the big love, even if he is only 6 months old. “He loves to cuddle, rough house with my dogs, and spend time watching the trees move and the birds fly around in the backyard,” his mom says. “We recently went on our first walk through some trails, and he did so well. Wes is very easy going, curious and endlessly loving - I am so lucky to have found him.” Ready to find your next BFF aka Best Feline Friend? We can help! Maui Cats Find Safety & Families in the Pacific Northwest We are humbled by the outpouring of support for the cats transferred to Seattle Humane from Maui through Good Cat Network’s Operation Aloha Cat program last month. Flying cats out of Maui to the Pacific Northwest means our partners in Hawaii can open their space to displaced and injured cats and focus their efforts on reuniting families. Simultaneously, Maui is experiencing its second kitten season of the year and is seeing an influx of kittens! Darlene Rayhill, executive director of Good Cat Network, expressed her gratitude to the Maui and Pacific Northwest community for stepping up and saving these cats and kittens. “We feel loved. We feel your aloha. Thank you. Your support keeps us going.” We could not agree more and are pleased to share that every Maui cat found a purr-fect new home to make their own. Mahalo! Watch how our furry friends from Maui settled in after a long flight to the mainland. More Than a Shelter: Keeping Bellies Full Across the Pacific Northwest Thank you to The Humane Society of the United States and Chewy for an enormous delivery of 25 pallets of pet food and supplies to Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank this month! With pet food inflation outpacing grocery costs—up almost 15% from last year—a growing number of families are facing the heartbreaking choice between feeding their pet companions and paying for their own necessities. Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank keeps pets fed and families together by providing nearly 82,000 meals per month to families and food banks throughout the region. This is a huge effort, and we are thankful to all those who keep our shelves stocked and bins brimming with kibble! Seattle Humane Celebrates World Rabies Day with Pet Wellness Clinic In honor of World Rabies Day, Seattle Humane is breaking down financial and geographical barriers to pet wellness care for our neighbors who are unsheltered or who are income qualified. On Saturday, September 30, from 12-3 p.m., we are partnering with several other organizations and hosting a free vaccine clinic at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center. Additional clinics are being offered at the same time by One Health Clinic and Seattle Animal Shelter in Seattle at El Centro de la Raza and by Auburn Valley Humane Society in Tacoma at the Northwest Spay & Neuter Center. Each site will only offer animal vaccines, flea treatment, microchips and pet supplies. Save the memories, not the car Are you looking for an easy way to help local pets in need? Don’t want to deal with the hassle of selling or trading your vehicle? If you answered yes, donate your vehicle to Seattle Humane’s Vehicle Donation Program, operated in partnership with Charitable Adult Rides & Services (CARS). CARS will walk you through the process and answer any questions. They handle all of the towing and paperwork and give you the documentation you need for tax purposes. You get the hassle-free satisfaction of knowing that your vehicle will be sold and the proceeds will be put to work immediately caring for pets in need.
