Our Working Cats Program is saving lives!
Seattle Humane's working cat program is an effort to save feral cats in local shelters. Since launching this program last year, we've adopted out 77 working cats! All cats in the program are deemed feral, unable to be returned to their colony and considered unadoptable at their host shelter or rescue. These cats are wary of people but make great working cats for barns, wineries, shops or even event private homes for pest control. Three of the cats saved by this program, Tabs, Elvira and Monster are now "employed" at The Grange in Issaquah, Washington. Now that they're all settled in and comfortable, the cats are busy diligently roaming the warehouse and hay barn taking care of business. The Grange's Operations Manager says they no longer have a rodent issue and that the store kitties are spoiled and loved. Working cats are adopted in pairs for companionship. Each cat is given a medical exam, microchip, vaccinations and is spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Interested in adopting a working cat or have questions about requirements? Talk to our adoption department today! SB 6196 would keep more families together – please sign your support!
Under current law, animal care and control agencies and nonprofit humane societies are severely limited in the veterinary services they can offer low-income Washingtonians. SB 6196 would expand these services and provide much-needed access to these loving pet owners.
When pets receive the veterinary care they need, everyone wins. Besides the tangible benefits to the animals (and the people who love them), the general public benefits because fewer families will be forced to surrender their pets to our municipal animal shelters because they can't afford care in the private sector. That means tax dollars will be saved and families will remain intact. That's a win-win for everyone. Take action now and let your representative know that you support SB 6196 and they should too.
