August eNews | Help us Clear the Shelter + Cats Arriving from Maui

Give Monthly

Help us Clear the Shelter this August!

Seattle Humane is once again participating in the Clear the Shelters campaign, where we join animal shelters across the country with the goal of finding loving families for as many pets as possible. Of course, the shelter will never truly be empty, because we are constantly pulling at-risk pets from overcrowded shelters here in Washington and across the country.
Now is a great time to find your new furry family member or make a donation in support of pets and the people who love them.
We hope to give the Clear the Shelters campaign a major boost with a one-day adoption event from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 26, where adoption fees for dogs and cats six months and older and all critters will be 50% off! Our friends from Hill’s, Seattle Humane and Clear the Shelters sponsor, will be at the event handing out goodies.
Our shelter is full of fur-bulous pets waiting to be your new best friend!

Supporting Our Community

We are heartbroken by the loss of life, land, homes and security so many people, pets and wildlife have suffered in the Maui wildfire. Seattle Humane, like so many individuals and organizations, has been exploring ways to help, even as the full impact of this tragedy continues to be tallied. We know many shelters on the island are working hard to balance their existing populations while also desperately trying to take in and reunite pets displaced in the fires. A large rescue flight would help unburden many shelters in Hawaii and increase their capacity to support Maui Humane and other local rescue groups. Shelters across the country are already struggling with overcrowding, and it takes many organizations coming together for a disaster flight of this scale to take off. We continue to proactively discuss with partners what that might look like in the near future.
We have confirmed a transfer this Thursday of cats and kittens from Maui through our friends at Good Cat Network. We hope to be able to help more soon, and we’re calling on our Rescue Squad to join us in this effort. The greatest way to help us increase our capacity at Seattle Humane is to adopt a shelter pet today to make room for more pets in need tomorrow!

Senior Dogs at Seattle Humane Fetch Grant

Sweet senior Taffy is all smiles after a successful dental surgery, thanks to the Grey Muzzle Fund.

Seattle Humane is one of 90 animal welfare groups chosen from 370 applicants to receive a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization to help save or improve the lives of at-risk senior dogs in our community. A portion of this grant went to immediate use to give Taffy—a stray senior pup with severe periodontal disease among other health matters—a winning smile and new leash on life.
Thanks to The Grey Muzzle Organization and our expert veterinary staff at the Schuler Family Medical Center, more senior dogs in our care and in the community will receive the medical treatment and love they deserve.
The national nonprofit The Grey Muzzle Organization improves the lives of at-risk senior dogs by providing funding and resources to animal shelters, rescue organizations, sanctuaries and other nonprofit groups nationwide. Visit www.greymuzzle.org for more details.

Fur Fighters Gather Ahead of Legislative Session

Seattle Humane was proud to welcome the Fur Fighters Caucus, a bipartisan group of Washington state legislators committed to supporting animal welfare issues, to our campus for their July 24 meeting. The caucus, led by Rep. Amy Walen, was founded in 2021 to champion bills that protect animals in Washington state. Caucus members were joined by representatives from local animal welfare advocates to review recent policy successes and discuss priority areas for the upcoming legislative session in January 2024.
Seattle Humane has identified Advocacy as a key priority in our 5-year strategic plan, Vision 2026. In partnership with our peers in animal welfare, we are committed to championing the rights of pets and people through both legislation and continued education. Our current areas of focus include eliminating pet restrictions in Washington state housing rentals and advocating for animal welfare career paths. We are grateful to be aligned with our many peer organizations in pursuing these aims as we find new ways to grow our impact together.
Thank you to all the legislators, voters and animal welfare organizations working together to improve the lives of animals here in our state.

More Than a Shelter: Support for Pet Owners

During the month of August, Seattle Humane team members are hard at work matching pets with loving families for Clear the Shelters. But, like every month, we’re also keenly focused on ensuring beloved pets never have to come through our shelter doors—meeting people where they are with the resources they need to keep their furry family members happy and healthy at home. Our Pet Food Bank alone provides roughly 82,000 meals per month to pets in need—that's nearly a million meals served in a year! Our dedicated veterinary team provides examinations, microchipping, vaccinations, testing and more through our Wellness Clinic, not to mention the many low-income spay/neuter surgeries performed inside our Schuler Family Medical Center. Seattle Humane also has donor-powered funds through our Pet Resource Center to help pet owners with emergency expenses that cover everything from pet deposits and temporary foster care to veterinary procedures and long-term treatments.
We at Seattle Humane believe everyone should be able to experience the love and companionship that comes with pet ownership, and a more humane world is one where that human-animal bond is strengthened—not broken. Learn more about these services and programs here.

Introducing Seattle Humane Board Member JB Williams

JB and his buddy Jake at WSU for Jake’s cancer treatment.

JB Williams’s connection to Seattle Humane goes back over 30 years, when he and his wife, Margaret, fostered a Seattle Humane pup. JB’s dedication to our cause has been unwavering ever since, and in 2022 he took the meaningful step of joining our board of directors, eager to contribute even more to our mission and future vision.
Find out more about JB’s passion for increasing accessibility to quality veterinary care in the region, and how he continues to lend his leadership and organizational effectiveness expertise to advance Seattle Humane’s vision for the future to support pets and the people who love them.

Two New Board Members Join Seattle Humane

We are excited to welcome Nate King and Cristin Flynn Goodwin to the Seattle Humane Board of Directors.
Nate King has worked as a finance professional with Starbucks, local startups, and now at Amazon as an Investor Relations Principal. He volunteered as a finance committee member with Seattle Humane for nearly a decade prior to joining the board. Nate shares his life with his wife and three mixed-breed dogs.
Cristin Flynn Goodwin is founder and CEO of Advanced Cyber Strategies and Advanced Cyber Law. She spent many years at Microsoft, solving complex cybersecurity legal problems across the organization. Cristin began her career as a trial lawyer in New York City and worked in the World Trade Center—which cemented her commitment to security for the rest of her career. In her free time, Cristin loves spending time with her two kids, German shepherd and two cats.
We are grateful for the entire board’s leadership and support as we continue to bring our Vision 2026 to life!

  • lire ou envoyer un e-mail ;
  • utiliser Google Drive ;
  • regarder une vidéo YouTube ;
  • partager une photo ;
  • télécharger une application ;
  • utiliser la recherche Google ;

2X MATCHING Gift Opportunity - Save 2x as Many Lives - BEFORE
Your donation goes twice as far to save and serve pets in need!
Dear aze,
I’m writing with exciting news about a chance to help save twice as many lives with your gift to Seattle Humane.
Thanks to a special 2X Matching Gift Opportunity, every dollar you donate this month — up to $100,000 — will go TWICE AS FAR to save and serve pets in need.
Match My Gift
I hope you’ll take advantage of this limited-time offer to save more pets in our community — like lovable little Lobster!
There was no question how Lobster got her name — it was the claw for a paw! While a fascinating appendage, Lobster’s claw paw served no functional purpose. In fact, it provided zero support, which meant she was using her carpal joint for support. Imagine walking on your wrists!
Our skilled veterinary team determined amputating the leg would help Lobster avoid future medical issues.
The surgery was a success! After just four days with a foster family, she was adopted! This beautiful tripod dog now goes by Yuna and has a big sister — who also has three legs.
There are no limits placed on pets in our care for space or time. How is that possible? Because of the support of caring people like you!
Remember, your gift today DOUBLES to save pets like Lobster and create lifelong bonds through adoption. Please rush your best gift now to make the most of this very special offer.
Thank you in advance for your compassionate support.
With gratitude,

Please Help Save Lives!
Show your support to keep pets safe and healthy all summer long!
Dear aze,
It’s Christopher again – here to talk more about how vital your summertime support of Seattle Humane can be for vulnerable pets in our community.
Before I do, let me tell you about Mui Mui and Mouse. Their story demonstrates the impact of your donation better than I could ever hope to...
line
Mama cat Mui Mui was surrendered to Seattle Humane after losing three of her kittens at birth. Then came a welcome surprise! While en route to Seattle Humane, she gave birth to a tiny kitten.
Mui Mui had a complicated delivery from start to finish. However, she received lifesaving veterinary care at Seattle Humane to ensure she could care for her healthy kitten, Mouse.
This is the part of the story where you come in. Because when you make a gift to Seattle Humane, you’ll help save and serve pets in need just like Mui Mui and Mouse this summer.
Give Now
During the summer, the number of pets in Seattle Humane’s care goes up while donations tend to go down. This makes your generosity even more meaningful to cats, dogs and critters at our shelter and in the community.
Whether it’s providing vaccines to keep pets healthy and happy at home or performing a more complicated medical intervention – your gift will help ensure Seattle Humane is ready to care for vulnerable pets this summer.
Thanks to lifesaving care made possible by friends like you, Mui Mui pulled through and was reunited with her kitten, Mouse. Now the two are thriving against all odds with loving adopters.
Meanwhile, more pets like Mui Mui come through our doors every day.
They all deserve a second chance, aze, don’t they? If you agree, I hope you’ll give now to help save and serve our community’s pets all summer long.
With gratitude,

aze, will you lend a helping hand?

Dear aze,

By now, you may have heard that shelters across Washington state are over capacity with large dogs. Many of these dogs are finding themselves in the noisy and unfamiliar environment of a shelter for the first time. Their stress level is really high. Some bark and pace back and forth in their kennels while others curl up and hide.

Seattle Humane is also struggling with an epic slowdown in large dog adoptions. No matter how nice a facility and how great the care, shelters are no place for any pet, and the longer they wait to find homes, the more their physical and mental health suffers.

On top of the increase in large dogs showing up, shelters are seeing the cost of everything rising due to inflation—from kibble to medical supplies. Today, I’m calling on our Rescue Squad to help us find comfort and loving homes for these large and lovable dogs. Here’s how you can help:

1. Spread the word on social media that Washington shelters need help finding loving homes for these dogs and quick! All you have to do is share this video and include a personalized message urging your network to consider adopting or supporting their local shelter.

2. Provide food and supplies by shopping our Amazon Wishlist. A yummy treat or comforting toy can go a long way to reduce a dog's fear and stress.

3. Adopt! Check out available dogs at Seattle Humane or visit Home To Home, an interactive platform where pets can find a loving new home without ever seeing the inside of a shelter.

4. Give generously. We need your support to give these dogs the lives they deserve. Will you consider giving a gift of $25, $50 or more to save a life?

As a pet parent of two rescue dogs, my heart breaks when I see so many pups at the shelter for weeks, months and even over a year like affectionate and smart Maxine. Please do what you can in whatever way you are able to step up and support these deserving dogs!

DONATE

In gratitude,

Libby Jones
