Help Give LA Shelter Pets a Second Chance

Our work isn't over yet! More support is urgently needed for LA fires transfer pets.

Dear aze,

First, I want to take a moment to acknowledge everyone who supported our recent Palisades pet transfer, whether through donating, fostering, or adopting. Thanks to your incredible generosity, almost all of those transfer pets have found a loving new home! We truly couldn’t have done it without loyal supporters like you.

However, our work isn’t over. There are still many roaming displaced pets from the LA fires, and local shelters are continuing to try and make room for them, with the goal of reuniting lost pets with their families. To help, we’ve stepped up again to bring another 32 dogs and 12 cats who were already in the LA shelter system to Seattle Humane.

Sunday afternoon, a second Wings of Rescue flight arrived at Boeing Field. Seattle Humane will provide these pets with medical care, food and shelter until they are able to find loving homes. With such a large group coming in, this effort requires significant resources, and we’re turning to our supporters once again for help. Please consider making another donation today to help these pets. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a profound impact.

Donations go directly toward medical treatment, food and a safe place to stay while they await adoption. Fostering or adopting are also powerful ways to support these efforts. Many pets transferred from Southern California to Seattle Humane are already available for adoption and can be identified with the Palisades Wildfire Rescue icon on their profiles.

Thank you for helping us during this critical time. Together, we can give these animals a second chance to find a home and offer hope to even more pets in need!

With Gratitude,

Chase Huffman

Plan Ahead for Your Pets

Dear aze,

You’re already part of Seattle Humane’s incredible Rescue Squad, saving lives and giving pets the second chances they deserve. But have you thought about how to ensure loving care for your own furry family members—no matter what life throws your way?

Here’s the scoop, aze: Your pets are counting on you to be their loving guardian and their best friend (and let’s be honest, their treat dispenser, too). That’s why making a plan for them is one of the kindest acts of care you can make.

With FreeWill, you can designate a trusted guardian to care for your pets and make sure they’re always loved, even if you’re not around. It’s completely free, takes less than 20 minutes, and you can start the year with calm and peace of mind. We recommend that you also include your pet’s current veterinarian so that their guardian can be aware of your pet’s history.

And if you want to make a paws-itive impact for all pets, you can also include an optional gift to Seattle Humane in your plans. Your legacy will save and support pets in need for years to come.

Thanks for being a dedicated animal lover and friend of Seattle Humane!

This Sunday, Seattle Humane welcomed over 60 animals rescued from shelters impacted by the devastating wildfires in Southern California.

Adopt, Foster, or Donate to help Palisades Fire Rescue Pets

Seattle Humane welcomed over 60 pets rescued from shelters impacted by the devastating wildfires in Southern California on Sunday. These pets, including 15-20 large dogs and a mix of small dogs and cats, arrived on a Wings of Rescue flight at Boeing Field. Relocating these pets helps free up space in California shelters, allowing them to care for newly displaced pets and work toward reuniting them with their families.

These pets are receiving expert medical care, nutritious food and a safe place to stay as they recover and prepare for adoption. Each of these pets has been through so much, and this effort is part of Seattle Humane's ongoing commitment to supporting pets not only in the Pacific Northwest, but struggling and overcrowded shelters across the country.

Many of these resilient pets just became available for adoption and can be identified by a special Palisades Wildfire Rescue icon on their profiles. By choosing to foster or adopt, you not only give a loving home to a pet in need but also help us continue lifesaving efforts for pets affected by emergencies. If you're unable to adopt or foster but would still like to help these pets, you can support them by donating here.

Together, we can offer these animals the fresh start they deserve.

Help Us Keep Our Shelves Stocked!

While our shelter population is high following the Palisades Fire rescue transfer, the need in our community is growing as well. Our Pet Food Bank is running low on supplies, making it harder to support local families in need. You can help us keep our shelves stocked by donating items from our Amazon Wishlist today. Together, we can ensure every pet in our community—whether in our care or their loving homes—has access to the resources they need to thrive.

Featured Pet: Celeste

Celeste is a very sweet and energetic 1-year-old shepherd mix who has been looking for a home here at Seattle Humane since last August. She loves to play with toys, really enjoys her treats and likes to go on walks – she would do well with an active family. Celeste can get overexcited and has some sensitivity to handling, so she would do best in a home with no small children. Celeste is still young and would benefit from ongoing training, which Seattle Humane can provide through our many dog training courses. Celeste loves meeting other active dogs who can match her energy and play style – she would likely do well in a home with a friendly and energetic canine companion. Due to her length of stay, Celeste’s new family can name their own adoption fee!

You can help by sharing her posts on Facebook or Instagram!

More than a Shelter: Highlighting Pets for Life Wellness Visits

The Pets for Life partnership program with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) allows Seattle Humane to bridge gaps in providing access to care in underserved communities in our region. Each month Pets for Life provides outreach, transportation for spay/neuter and wellness home visits to better serve owners in the 98106, 98108 and 98146 area codes. Pets for Life is a small but mighty program in our Vet Services department, and we’re proud to highlight some of the great work that's been done through the Pets for Life and Community Medicine teams this past month!

The team provided in-home veterinary care for 10 pets in November—our team brings much-needed wellness and medical care directly to pets and their families at no charge to them. One of the newest Pets for Life clients, Michelle and her puppy, Ava, received vaccines so Ava can start socializing and exploring the world! The team saw an additional 48 pets through Seattle Humane's wellness clinic in Burien in November.

Foster Spotlight: Brendan and Maria Minami

When they’re not making sweet music together in their UW alumni band, Brendan and Maria are providing peace and harmony for shelter dogs needing a kennel break here at Seattle Humane. They were inspired to foster after seeing a news article about the need for foster parents and began fostering this past May.

“We saw an article in the Seattle Times asking for foster parents, even if it was short-term breaks, and we thought it would be a good way to hang out with dogs,” Brendan says. “I’ve had dogs for basically my whole life. My parents even have a parrot that’s older than me, so I’ve always been around critters.”

Brendan and Maria love to talk to their friends and neighbors about the dogs they’re fostering, hyping them up and being advocates for them as they wait to find their families.

Whether it’s for several weeks or just a few days, fostering is incredibly important and rewarding work, and you can see the difference it makes in the pets as they settle and relax. Brendan and Maria encourage anyone to do it if they know what they can commit to before going in. “Be realistic and honest about your limitations and what you are able to take on,” Brendan says. “If you’re able to do it, be sure to practice your snuggling.”
