The MaxMobile Rides Again and Summer Camps Return!

The Max is back!
Driver James Templeman and the MaxMobile are on the road again!

In honor of National Pet Month, we’re thrilled to announce the MaxMobile, our bright yellow cat adoption bus, is back on the road and will make its first public appearance on Saturday, May 22, at Auburn’s Happy Paws pet event, a scaled-down version of its popular Petpalooza festival. Like so many other things, the pandemic put the brakes on our MaxMobile program in early 2020.

With the latest safety protocols still in place, we look forward to once again traveling around the region, bringing adoptable pets and animal education into our communities. We have missed you and can’t wait to restart this critical program!

Summer Camp is Coming!

When it comes to creativity, our Humane Education team gets an A+ for all the ways it’s connected with kids and teens during the pandemic. This summer, they’ll be connecting IN-PERSON! You read that right: our popular Animal Adventures summer camps will include some in-person options later this summer! Sessions are available during four weeks in July and August, on your choice of Monday & Tuesday or Thursday & Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Camps include activities and supplies to take home, as well as the option to join virtual programs on off-campus days. Registration begins at 8 a.m. this Saturday, May 15. You can receive a notification the moment it goes live by completing this interest form.

Know an Amazing Teen Who Loves Animals?
Applications are now open for Humane Teen Club (HTC), our junior volunteer and teen development program for animal advocates who are 13-17 years old. Interested candidates should check out the Youth Programs page on our website, or email HTC@seattlehumane.org.

You Can Save Lives! Support Our Spay & Neuter Programs

Holly, recovering after her emergency surgery.

One of the surest ways we can help our fur babies and pets in the community live longer, healthier lives is to make sure they’re spayed or neutered. Holly, a 10-year-old dog, recently came to us with pyometra, a dangerous infection in the uterus that can cause death in a matter of days. Treatment requires a delicate spay surgery, and in some cases, intensive post-operative care. The cost of this life-saving treatment can easily add up. Seattle Humane is grateful to provide low-cost options for families like Holly’s.

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, Holly was able to receive the surgery through our public Spay & Neuter program and is back at home with her loving family. It’s just one of the many ways we help pets beyond our shelter doors — through reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for dogs and cats of low-income families in our community. Our popular Mom’s Last Litter program also offers free spay surgeries for hard-working mama cats and dogs brought to Seattle Humane with adoptable litters.

How Can You Help? ‘Spay It Forward’!
Your gift today in support of our spay and neuter services will save the lives of countless pets by preventing unwanted litters. It also protects them against numerous medical and behavioral problems.

Yes, I want to help pets in need!

Welcome Back! Volunteers Return to Campus

Fluff n’ Fold volunteer Caitlin Murphy and long-time Vet Services volunteer Marianne Anderegg returned to the shelter earlier this month. Staff members eagerly await the arrival of even more volunteer friends in the coming months!

The first wave of volunteers recently returned to the shelter — offering helping hands to our Vet Services department, the Pet Food Bank and with Fluff ‘n Fold in our ever-busy laundry rooms where we do an estimated 40-50 loads of laundry every day! Seeing old friends with their bright-red volunteer T-shirts back on campus again has been both emotional and exhilarating for our staff and returning volunteers.

“This is such an important part of my life. I’ve done this for close to nine years. When you volunteer 2-3 times a week, these people are like family to you. It’s so good to see everybody,” said Vet Services volunteer Marianne Anderegg. We couldn’t agree more, Marianne!

Our GiveBIG Success, Thanks to You!

A BIG thanks to all of our supporters who joined us for our GiveBIG campaign this year!

We’re on track to raise more than $90,000 during GiveBIG 2021, after tallying the gifts made on our GiveBIGWA.org page, plus our amazing $10,000 matching gift from Carolyn Webb and her cat Reilly, and additional support coming in through Donor Advised Funds.

From prescription diet food for pets in our care to emergency vet care for a family pet in need, these GiveBIG gifts will help provide exceptional care for pets in need this spring and summer. Thank you!

Strike a Paws  — Our Pawparazzi Photo Contest is Back!

Seattle Humane’s first ever Pawparazzi photo contest raised more than $18,000 last year. We are excited to announce that our 2021 Pawparazzi competition kicks off on June 14!

The top fundraiser will win an inscribed paver, and the second and third place fundraisers will win an inscribed brick. Bricks and pavers will be permanently installed in the Seattle Humane walkway this fall. The memory of your pet’s victory (and your pet) will live on forever!

You may remember from last year, each vote costs just $1, so the more dollars you raise, the more votes your pet will receive, and the more lives we can touch at Seattle Humane. Register today and get started! The competition will end on July 14, so there is plenty of time for your pet to charm their way to victory. Please contact events@seattlehumane.org with any questions.

Audrey: Home at Last

Audrey and her new dad, Kasey.

National Rescue Dog Day is May 20 and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by sharing this happy news — Audrey has been adopted! This beautiful 4-year-old girl was the subject of a special email we sent to many of you last month, detailing her difficult journey.

We KNEW the perfect family was out there, but we needed your help in finding them. That’s when we heard from a big-hearted guy named Kasey. He was willing to give Audrey a chance, and after a few short weeks of fostering her in his home through our Foster-to-Adopt program, he decided Audrey was a keeper and adopted her.

Thank you, Kasey, and to all the members of our Seattle Humane Rescue Squad for giving hope and loving homes to thousands of pets every year! We’d also like to thank all the staff and volunteers — from our Foster, Behavior, Adoptions, Vet Services and Communications & Marketing teams — for never giving up on this sweet girl during her lengthy stay with us. Thanks to your compassion and care, Audrey is home at last.

What We’re Reading

In honor of Mother’s Day this month, we’re offering this selection: “The Wisdom of Moms: Love and Lessons from the Animal Kingdom,” by Bridget Hamilton.

It’s a beautifully photographed and touching tribute to the animal moms of our world and the amazing ways they love and protect their young in the wild. If you have a book suggestion you think other animal lovers would like, we’d love to hear it!

May Foster Parent of the Month
We think you’ll agree — kind and patient foster mom Erika Walker is the perfect choice as May Foster Parent of the Month! Walker is tops when it comes to tiny kittens — helping them grow from defenseless “bottle babies” to mini pouncing panthers in just weeks! How does she do it? Read her story here.
