Paws Across the Pacific - An Inside Look

Seattle Humane monthly newsletter. Updates, events, and more!

Fresh off the plane from Hawaii, these kittens were ready for new homes in the Northwest.

Seattle Humane Welcomes Historic Rescue Flight from Hawaii

The sun came out to greet more than 600 Hawaii shelter animals on Wings of Rescue’s historic Paws Across the Pacific rescue flight when they touched down at Boeing Field on Oct. 29. This was the organization’s largest flight and the first out-of-state transfer from Hawaii since March.

Nearly a dozen mainland shelters participated in Paws Across the Pacific, taking in cats and dogs from shelters struggling to manage capacity issues on five of the Hawaiian Islands hit hard by COVID-19. Seattle Humane’s Chief of Shelter Medicine, Dr. Jessica Reed, led a MASH Unit on the ground at Boeing Field, addressing any veterinary support needed during the transfer. Despite a long trip to the Pacific Northwest, the more than 600 animals unloaded from the chartered C-130 Hercules were in good shape and ready to hit the road to their respective shelters.

Mainland shelter teams worked together to unload hundreds of crates from the cargo plane, running them to a nearby hangar. Seattle Humane staff and volunteers provided the 26 cats and 8 dogs in their care with a light lunch while paperwork was checked before departure. Back at the shelter, Seattle Humane team members from multiple departments set to work preparing cubbies, dorms and kennels for these Hawaiian guests. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the amazing operation here.

Animals on our website from the Wings of Rescue flight have a special badge on their profile pictures. View them on our adoptions page, and then submit a pre-adoption questionnaire. Applications are reviewed in the order received.

Our building is still closed to the public due to COVID-19, but we’re still doing all we can to help people and pets in our community and beyond from life-saving rescues like Paws Across the Pacific, to helping local families through our Pet Food Bank and community outreach efforts, to offering reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries and emergency veterinary care to pet owners struggling financially. You can help all our programs and the pets and people they serve by making a gift today.

Introducing Whisker Wonderland!
After careful consideration, we have decided not to hold our traditional winter photo event and festivities at Seattle Humane this year. We will miss seeing our community and their beloved pets showing up for this fun photo event at the shelter, and encourage you to instead participate in our first-ever Whisker Wonderland photo competition, an easy and fun way to show off your festive fur baby!

Simply register, then upload your favorite photo of your pet celebrating the seasonal spirit romping in the snow or even donning an ugly sweater! Spread the word to your friends and family as every dollar donated to your pet’s photo page will equal one vote for your pet! The five pets receiving the most votes will be featured on our Seattle Humane social media channels at the end of December! You can add a little extra glam to your pet’s photo using one of the fun photo props or frames, or add a frame to your Facebook profile to let people know you are making a difference in the lives of pets throughout our community. This fun photo contest will run from Nov. 12 — Dec. 18. Visit the contest website to learn more and register today!

Kudos for Dr. Katie Kuehl!
Dr. Katie Kuehl was named the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) 2020 WSU Faculty Member of the Year during a virtual ceremony in mid-October, just shy of her three-year anniversary as director of Seattle Shelter Medicine Rotation at the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

“I am humbled to receive this award from the WSVMA and grateful for all of the team members at Seattle Humane that have helped me create and maintain high-quality clinical learning experiences for WSU veterinary students,” Dr. Kuehl said.

We’re so proud and thankful for all you do, Dr. Kuehl! Read more about how she’s making a difference from Pullman to the Puget Sound here.

Introducing The Mouser Program!
Seattle Humane’s Working Cat Program has a new name — The Mouser Program! While the name has changed, our commitment remains the same — saving the lives of semi-feral or feral cats who can’t be adopted as indoor companions, but can be placed in private homes, barns or local businesses for pest control.

Mousers are typically adopted in pairs for companionship and each cat is given a medical exam, microchip, vaccinations and is spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Interested in adopting a Mouser? We require a solid structure that provides warmth, light, food, and a soft place to sleep that’s safe from predators. Complete this pre-adoption questionnaire if you’re interested in a Mouser!

Save the date!
Seattle Humane’s 32nd Annual Tuxes & Tails is Sept. 18, 2021. While we wait to determine whether we gather in person or virtually, we hope you will mark your calendar to join us for a fun and fabulous evening featuring exclusive silent and live auctions, incredible wines, and adorable animals. This celebration of philanthropy is the most significant fundraiser of the year to support pets in need and the people who love them.
Bruno, Indy and Rocky — Home at Last
Three dogs that spent months — even years — in Seattle Humane's care are with their forever families today. They have someone to walk them, toss a ball to them, scratch them between the ears and most importantly, someone who will let them know they are loved each and every day. Bruno, Indy and Rocky were all hard-to-place dogs, but definitely not hard-to-love.
Bruno
Bruno was with Seattle Humane for nearly two years or 555 days in all before his adoption on Sept. 1. The many foster families that took him in LOVED him, most of them saying this sweetie had two basic needs — cuddling and playing. He went through two significant surgeries which hampered his love of chasing (and destroying) tennis balls, but each time he pulled through. His life changed forever when a wonderful family signed up to foster-to-adopt him and realized they couldn't let him go. Bruno's mom recently wrote us to say "I still can't believe y'all let me take the best dog! He is everything I hoped for and more."
Indy
Indy was adopted just a few weeks later, on Sept. 26 — another success story in our Foster-to-Adopt program. Indy came to us nearly a year ago and quickly developed quite a following. Some called them Indy's "army." On walks, Indy reacted to other dogs by barking and lunging, what we call "reactivity.” While he made major improvements in foster care, he needed continued work in his new home. Fortunately, our Adoption team found just the right person. His new dad, Mike, recently wrote that waking up to Indy's sweet little face brings him joy every day and he promised to give him the wonderful life that he deserves.
Rocky
Rocky, a five-year-old Boxer mix, came to us in January, before COVID. He had reactivity issues as well and needed to be the only pet in the home. To his many fans at Seattle Humane, he was simply Rocky the Rockstar — a great hiking partner and couch potato. He's doing plenty of both these days with his new family, who recently wrote: "He is an amazing dog and we are happy to have found him. Thank you Seattle Humane and your great team of volunteers for taking great care of him and making the whole process easy."
