Learn about what's been going on at Seattle Humane

Mint’s fresh start

CTS enews

Clear the Shelters, presented by Hill's, provides Seattle Humane and our shelter partners across the country with an amazing opportunity to amplify our messaging for adoptable pets who haven’t yet found their way home, and we are excited to share those stories with you all month long in August! This work will be amplified through NBCUniversal Local, which launched this adoption and donation campaign back in 2015, and we look forward to collaborating with our local media partners.

Many shelter pets spend a very long time waiting to find families due to one or several factors, whether it be age, a chronic medical condition, unfair breed restrictions or a behavioral challenge requiring additional training and specific housing needs.

Mint

Mint was pulled from a high-kill shelter in Texas by our friends at Saving Shelter Strays back in 2021 and adopted a week later. She found herself back in our care nearly three years later when her previous owner was experiencing financial hardship.

Back on campus Mint struggled with reactivity toward other dogs and was fearful of loud noises and new situations. She did much better in a foster home but would resource guard things like food.

We promoted Mint during last year’s Clear the Shelters campaign and, shortly after, this sweet pit bull found a family that signed her up for our Reactive Rover course and kept working with her and giving Mint the love she needed to settle into her new home.

Mint and her family recently packed up and relocated to Connecticut to attend Yale – her parents, not Mint!

“Over the past year, she's seen 13 new states, completed three training programs, developed a taste for salmon and peanut butter, and remains the cuddliest pup you'll ever meet,” her mom says. “As she’s gotten more comfortable, she has started using her voice more and is not afraid to paw mom and dad when she demands more pets. It’s clear her favorite things are giving her parents facials, destroying squeaky toys and playing hide-and-seek. Without a doubt, she is the best part of our day.

“Mint has taught us more patience, love, and grace in the past year than we have learned in our 25 years. We are so blessed to have such an outspoken, loving and fearless companion.”

Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Bluesky to see which wonderful shelter pets are ready to change your lives for the better this Clear the Shelters! And check out our online shop to order some gear for your new furry friend!

Featured Pet: Zeppelin

Zeppelin is a sweet and spry 7-year-old pit bull mix who has been looking for a new family at Seattle Humane for more than two months now. This senior pittie enjoys spending time with people and going on long walks. He would make a great companion and enjoy living in a quiet home. Zeppelin really enjoys car rides, and especially any place that serves pup cups. Zeppelin spent most of his life with the same family but was stressed out by the addition of a baby in the home – he would do best in a home with no young children and as the only dog in the home. Zeppelin’s new family can name his adoption fee! Help share Zeppelin on Facebook and Instagram!

Coming Together for Seattle Humane

PFB Volunteers

Seattle Humane’s lifesaving work is strengthened by our community investing in our mission and programs to help pets and the people who love them.

Svanee and Russ Castner understood our goal to support more community pets with serious medical cases inside our Schuler Family Medical Center, specifically those in need of emergency surgeries and other specialized services.

They worked with our team to make a long-term investment by creating Svanee’s Last Chance Fund. Our veterinary team can access this dedicated fund on a case-by-case basis to give pets who have life-threatening medical cases with nowhere else to turn.  If you’d like to help contribute to Svanee’s fund, you can do so here.

Oogie's PFB

Over the last few years, Seattle Humane has seen a dramatic increase in food insecurity in our community, particularly for folks looking for help feeding their pets. Kelli and Phil Spencer understand the vital role Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank plays in keeping pets happy and healthy with the people who love them. They stepped up for hungry pets across the region and made a generous multi-year investment that will ensure we have a steady and predictable source of food and supplies for years to come. You can contribute to Oogie’s Ohana Pet Food Bank fund here.

Seattle Humane has renamed our food bank Oogie’s Ohana Pet Food Bank in honor of Kelli and Phil’s adorable, adopted pup Oogie who came to Seattle Humane from our rescue partner Maui Humane!

These are just two examples of passionate donors coming together to create a lasting impact for pets at Seattle Humane. It’s the community’s investment that has sustained us for more than 125 years, allowing us to innovate and adapt to the needs of our clients. Every dollar counts and every gift matters. Thank you, Rescue Squad for your support to ensurepets, people and each other will continue to be cared for!

We’ll provide the pets while Thomas Family Farm provides food trucks, yard games and plenty of family activities! Thomas Family Farm is located at 9010 Marsh Road in Snohomish.

Foster Spotlight: Carine

Foster Spotlight_Carine

Seattle Humane’s August Foster Spotlight Carine has always had pets, but when her grown kids moved out and took their cats with them, she found herself with an empty nest she could fill with shelter cats needing a little TLC before completing their journeys home.

“I’ve always wanted to make a tangible difference in animals' lives, and Seattle Humane’s mission deeply resonated with me,” Carine says. “Their support and compassion made it easy to get involved.”

Carine encourages anyone thinking about fostering to give it a try, citing the amazing feeling of watching a shelter pet gain the confidence and strength to make their way home.

“You don’t need to be perfect – you just need to be patient, compassionate and open to learning. The love you get in return is beyond anything you could imagine,” she says. “Knowing I played a small part in their journey makes every moment worth it.”

Capes Optional: Be a Laundry Hero!

Laundry

Summer means lots of young animals at Seattle Humane, and those babies create A LOT of laundry! Shelter Support volunteers ensure these essential supplies are clean and ready to use, and we're looking for more hands to help during these busy summer months so we can continue to keep all our pets comfy and healthy during their stay. This is a great way to get involved if you’re looking for a short-term role or flexible scheduling! We have multiple daily shifts between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., with an especially high need for help in the mornings from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Learn more and get started here.

Board Spotlight: Marie Huwe

Marie

Seattle Humane Board Member Marie Huwe packed up her belongings and moved from California to Seattle in 1997 to take a position at Microsoft. She found herself looking for a new companion for her cat, Conan, after her other feline family member passed.

Marie came to Seattle Humane’s old campus on Eastgate Way, which she admits left a lot to be desired, and it made her feel sad. Back then, there were outside dog kennels, surgeries being performed in modified storage closets and a lower live-save rate. She initially left emptyhanded, but a good friend encouraged her to come back – she left the second time with two kittens, whom she named Angel and Spike.

“I’m super impressed with what Seattle Humane is doing for the community,” she says. “It’s clear when animals come through the door they are loved, they are carefully put out for adoption, and that Seattle Humane does everything they can for those families to make them as successful as possible.”

Help Save Dogs Like Dobby
aze,
Dobby is a small Australian shepherd mix, part of a litter of 5 puppies all around 6 months old that were transferred in from Yakima. He arrived at Seattle Humane with his front left leg badly injured—it was assumed he had been hit by a car. Unfortunately, X-rays showed he had been shot at as a young puppy.
Thankfully, our vets were able to surgically remove the shrapnel from his leg and confirm that the broken bone was healing correctly. He was also prescribed medication to help with swelling and prevent infection.
He was adopted quickly after recovering from his surgery and is very happy in his new home.
Your gift today will ensure pets like Dobby can receive the shelter, care and second chances they so desperately need.
Give Now
Please help Seattle Humane save more cats, dogs and critters and provide the loving care that gives them a much needed—and much-deserved—second chance.
You can turn neglect and loneliness into safety and love. Your support can give an abandoned pet a chance for a healthy, happy life.
With heartfelt gratitude,
