Paws-ing to say thank you!

This Thanksgiving, from our family to yours, we want to say THANK YOU.

We hope you know that we see your caring heart and that we appreciate you. Friends and supporters like YOU make it possible for us to continue saving lives, completing families and keeping pets with the people who love them.

Here are just a few of the pets and their grateful families touched by your support.

Zoey

Zoey is an adorable, big-eared pup who became sick after a very severe womb infection called pyometra. Zoey’s dad, Michael, who recently suffered a traumatic brain injury and is unable to work, could not afford Zoey’s surgery at the clinic by his home. Michael called Seattle Humane and was able to contribute half the cost of the surgery with the remainder covered by our donor-powered Pet Owner Assistance Fund.

Michael drove Zoey over 60 miles—experiencing a flat tire and dead cell phone on the way—so Zoey could receive this life saving surgery. Zoey and Michael are spending a cozy Thanksgiving together thanks to your support.

Sadie

Sadie was surrendered to Seattle Humane in May 2022 after having spent the past seven years with the same family. They needed to care for a relative and, while Sadie was a senior dog, she still had lots of energy and love to give, which they felt she would get from a new family. Everyone here fell in love with snuggly Sadie, feared only by the chew toys she left in her wake. Every time we shared Sadie with our followers, people would wonder why this amazing dog was still here.

Then, on Day 454, Sadie’s long wait to find her family was finally over. Anyone in the shelter that day would have noticed all the extra wet floor signs as there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Sadie’s new mom works at another animal shelter, and she gets to be her administrative assistant on weekends, where—no surprise—she is adored by the staff and volunteers there as well. Waiting is so hard, but seeing pets like Sadie find their perfect match just before the holiday season makes it so worth it.

Sweetie Pie

Sweetie Pie came to Seattle Humane as part of a large surrender of 27 cats from a hoarding situation. During her intake exam, it was discovered that she had a significant head tilt due to a painful ear infection, which also caused this poor girl to develop an upper respiratory infection. Sweetie Pie was given medication to clear her infection and a doting foster family to help her rest and learn to love a human family.

It took time and patience for Sweetie Pie to grow into her name, but her foster family did a phenomenal job! She is now a very playful kitty and enjoys getting pets and chattering away at her new mom.

Timber

We know the bond between people and their pets can be critical to their emotional and mental health, as well as their sense of safety. This can be especially true for survivors of domestic violence, who can oftentimes feel as though they don’t have the tools to successfully leave the situation with their pet.

Sweet pup Timber received pet food and supplies from our Pet Food Bank this year during his journey to a safer environment with his mom. Thank you, Timber, for being a source of calm and security for your mom, and a heartfelt thank you to our Rescue Squad for helping us keep pets and people together!

All these pets and their families are celebrating this holiday season—happy, healthy and together—thanks to you. We are grateful for you today and every day of the year!

UPDATE! Maui Cats Find Safety & Families in the Pacific Northwest

Tuxedo cat Pekelo (bottom) and his new sister Nalani (top)

We were humbled by the outpouring of support for the cats transferred to Seattle Humane from Maui through Good Cat Network’s Operation Aloha Cat program this summer. Relocating cats to the Pacific Northwest during the devastating wildfires meant our partners in Hawaii could open their space to displaced and injured cats and focus their efforts on reuniting families.

We are also grateful for adoption updates about these fine felines and how they are doing in their new homes. It’s even better when it’s a DOUBLE adoption update!

Thanks so much to Good Cat Network, Honi Honi Cats Maui and Seattle Humane! Pekelo came home as a new member of our family here in North Seattle on Friday and we couldn’t be happier!

Pekelo [was] skittish but he is coming out to eat and even play with the other kitten [Nalani] we adopted from Seattle Humane that day. We believed it would be good for both of them to have each other and he is really responding to Nalani’s sweet energy. Both join 12-year-old matriarch, Olivia, who came to us as a 1-year-old and is the best mama cat ever. She will keep them in line.

We are so grateful for these organizations for all they do to help these kitties find new homes.

-Chris F.

Thank you to everyone who spread the word, adopted a Maui cat and cheered on these precious kitties as they made their way into new homes.

Seattle Humane and the ASPCA Are Committed to Keeping Pets with Their People

For the 95% of pet owners who consider their pets part of the family, there is no compromising when it comes to pet-friendly housing. No one should feel forced to decide between having a roof over their head or keeping their beloved pets. That is why Seattle Humane is collaborating with the ASPCA and other animal welfare organizations to remove barriers and keep people and pets together here in Washington state.

You can show your support by signing the petition to let state lawmakers know that you support efforts to make housing affordable and accessible to pet owners.

More than a Shelter: Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank

SouthEast Seattle Senior Center members were overjoyed to receive pet food from Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank during a vaccine clinic hosted by Seattle Humane’s Community Medicine team.

Seattle Humane’s Pet Food Bank started in 1983 with 15 volunteers and a $500 donation, and since then has provided vital pet food for the past 40 years. Through growing and expanding community partnerships that include local food banks, churches and senior centers, the Pet Food Bank continues to be a crucial resource for our region. Joined by committed Pet Food Bank volunteer drivers, packers, partners and donors, we delivered more than ONE MILLION meals, serving more than 23,000 clients over the past 12 months.

We are grateful to everyone who supports this enormous effort to keep families together—and so are the families!

I cannot thank you enough for all that you do for Antonia and me. She was a gift to me and I am on fixed income. These donations make it possible for me to have my dog and give her decent food. As a result she is now 65 lbs, happy and healthy. She is a priceless companion for me. Our daily walks are helping me to get off some of my medications. She is a great benefit to me.

-Teresa K.

Board Spotlight: Nipun Dureja

Nipun (left) and his beautiful cat, Mimi (right), who sadly passed away earlier this year.

Nipun, who spent his childhood in India, never had animals growing up. His wife, Fiona, who grew up with pets, quickly proposed the idea of adopting a cat after they got married. It was then that Nipun discovered the love, affection and companionship of pets from his first cat, Seattle Humane alum Mimi.

While Nipun’s appreciation for animals started with adopting Mimi 14 years ago, it was a chance meeting with Seattle Humane’s President & CEO, Christopher Ross, at a conference that prompted him to join the board of directors. Learn more about how Nipun is lending his technology expertise to improve the lives of shelter animals at Seattle Humane.

Welcome Val Parrish!

We are excited to have recently welcomed Val Parrish to the Seattle Humane Board of Directors. Val has been on a variety of nonprofit boards and most recently spent nine years on Woodland Park Zoo’s board. She is currently on their Animal Care committee.

Val and her husband, Jerry, live on the Eastside and have four grown children and two ragdoll cats. She enjoys walking, traveling, Pilates and playing with her cats.
