Sam Gets a Fresh Start Sam (FKA Olivia) was surrendered to us in early November. A beautiful and super-smart German shepherd, she struggled with some adolescent behaviors that, had she been a little dog, might have come off as cute to some. Like most of our long-timers, she didn’t show well in the shelter and struggled to find her new family. That’s where Team Seattle Humane’s Adoption and Behavior experts stepped in to help! What she needed was a family with experience living, loving and training a dog like Sam. We first were in touch with Sam’s new family back in May—they’d recently lost their German shepherd and saw a lot of his loveable quirks in Sam. Our adoption advisors providing detailed information about what Sam would need to succeed in her new home and the family came to Seattle Humane several times to meet with Sam. We were all so excited for Sam to head home in May and are so committed to her success, we also offered in-home training for her future needs. We’re thrilled to report that things are going well for Sam and her family after a month and we continue to cross our paws that she’ll be doing even better when we check back in at the 3-month mark. “Today we took Sam to swim, as the lake was empty and colder, and she had a blast,” her mom says. “I can see she is warming up, learning how to have a family and learning how to trust being loved on. The other day she slept so hard, and I think she is finally starting to relax more. We believe Sam deserves a fresh start and hope we can provide her with our forever family.” We have many fabulous dogs just like Sam looking for their new homes. Now is a great time to open your heart and home to your new four-legged best friend! More Than a Shelter: Providing Resources and Training for Pets & People Pet training and socialization are among the most important aspects of responsible pet ownership, and they go hand in hand with proper nutrition, veterinary care and love in raising a well-rounded pet. Untrained and poorly socialized pets are among the largest groups of animals surrendered to shelters each year—many of them staying in shelters for weeks, months and even years. That is why Seattle Humane is invested in increasing the scope and visibility of our pet training services—to keep our region’s pets in their homes, where they belong. We offer a variety of workshops and regularly scheduled classes for you and your pet companion focused on good manners in the real world, socialization and giving you the tools to prevent or address behavior challenges. We invite you to check out our available classes and behavior resources. For questions regarding our classes and workshops, please email dogtraining@seattlehumane.org or call (425) 641-0080. Caring for Kittens is a Messy Business Paws and Effect Every year, hundreds of vulnerable kittens come into our care, too young and fragile to immediately go up for adoption. For these young kittens to survive, it takes countless hours of extraordinary care and extra help to stay happy and healthy. We are immensely grateful for the volunteers, foster parents and those who have donated generously to keep our shelter and programs humming along during this busy time. We can’t change lives without mew! Everyone can become a hero this kitten season, no matter what your age, ability or resources are. In fact, it can take as little as five minutes to help save lives: Check out our Amazon wishlist to purchase supplies for kittens in our foster care program. If you find a litter of tiny kittens outdoors, check out our online Help for Found Kittens resources to determine the next best steps for keeping kittens safe and healthy. And remember! By spaying and neutering your cats, you are helping address pet homelessness by preventing overcrowding in your local shelters. The more cats who are fixed, the more room we have for other pets in need. Seattle Humane Supports the Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act Earlier this summer, Representatives Jason Crow (D-CO), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced the bipartisan Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act to Congress. If passed, this bill will establish a grant program administered by USDA with the goal to help local governments and nonprofits that provide shelter or permanent supportive housing to retrofit proper to accommodate unhoused individuals with pets, while providing additional veterinary services—including spay and neuter surgery, vaccinations and other basic veterinary care. The PUPP Act will help ensure families, veterans and other people experiencing housing insecurity with pets don't have to make the heartbreaking choice between shelter and their four-legged family members. On any given night in America, nearly 600,000 people experience homelessness, among them veterans, women and children. The pandemic has worsened the problem. While various reasons may lead some unhoused people to refuse available shelter, a primary reason cited is the scarcity of pet-friendly emergency or temporary housing. A 2017 study revealed that 48 percent of unhoused pet-owning people reported being turned away from shelters because of pet policies. Seattle Humane supports this bipartisan effort and today, we call upon our Rescue Squad to email and call your local representative to urge them to co-sponsor the PUPP Act. Below is draft language you can personalize in your message. Thank you for joining us in support of the PUPP Act! — Dear REPRESENTATIVE NAME: I was so pleased to see the bipartisan Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act (H.R. 3989) introduced earlier this summer by Jason Crow (D-CO), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), and Nancy Mace (R-SC). As your constituent and animal welfare advocate, I write to ask you to cosponsor the PUPP Act today. This is an incredibly important piece of legislation aimed at keeping pets with the people who love them, especially during times of housing transition and insecurity. The number of homeless families, veterans, and other Americans has increased drastically, jumping 20 percent between 2020 and 2021. Adding to their trauma and stress, many of these people often face an impossible choice: either accept available shelter or face losing their beloved pets due to the lack of pet-friendly interim and permanent housing options. The emotional well-being that pets bring to people in crisis cannot be overstated. For unhoused people, their pets provide companionship, comfort and a sense of security. As a Seattle Humane supporter, I believe in the human-animal bond and the PUPP Act would help address a root problem leading to pets being surrendered to shelters in our region. I hope you will choose to join your colleagues in bipartisan support of the PUPP Act. Thank you for your consideration and for all that you do for our community. Sincerely, YOUR NAME Featured Pet: Skipper Everyone is buzzing about Barbie and Ken in anticipation of the upcoming blockbuster movie about the iconic fashion dolls. One name left out of those conversations? Skipper. Sadly, that’s also the case for our very own guinea pig who shares the same name. Skipper has been in our care for months without any interested parties, leaving us puzzled. He has been an exemplary mentor to many younger guinea pigs, teaching them about the best leafy greens like parsley and cilantro. (He has quite the palate!) Skipper would thrive in a home with a younger guinea pig to keep him company. Just like the beloved dolls created by Mattel, Skipper interacts well with children. He has even assisted our Education Team in teaching youngsters about animal welfare in classrooms and summer camps! Can’t foster or adopt Skipper but want to help him find a family of his own? Spread the word about him among your friends, family, neighbors and colleagues!
