Learn about what's been going on at Seattle Humane

Howard’s Pupdate

enews-march25-howard

Howard arrived at Seattle Humane last fall in desperate need of help. Found abandoned in a dumpster near a truck stop, he was brought to us by our compassionate friends at the Doney Clinic. The young pup was emaciated, lethargic and battling juvenile cellulitis—also known as puppy strangles, a painful skin condition on his nose and face. His recovery has been a long and challenging one, but we are thrilled to announce that Howard is looking and feeling much better now!

On his darkest day, Howard was met with love, care and compassion. Thanks to our dedicated veterinary team, his loving new family and the support of our generous donors, this resilient pup has turned his life around.

Howard is now thriving, surrounded by both human and dog friends. He has developed a love for sunshine, snow and even oranges! It's a joy to see him so happy and healthy after all he's been through.

More than a Shelter: Building Relationships & Breaking Down Barriers

enews-march25-clinic

We returned to the Burien Community Center in January for one of our recent community clinics as part of the ongoing work to increase access to care for Latino folks in South Seattle. This clinic was not just about offering veterinary services, but about fostering a sense of trust and security within a community that has historically faced barriers to pet care. These off-site clinics are made possible because of the multi-year grant we received from PetSmart Charities in 2023, aimed at addressing some of the most significant challenges in Latino communities that impact the ability of people to care for their pets and keep families together.

Thanks to our dedicated veterinary team, led by Seattle Humane’s Community Medicine veterinarian, Dr. Hadar Friedman, we provided essential care to 50 pets—25 dogs and 25 cats. Our team administered vaccines, microchips and a variety of other treatments. The clinic also supplied families with pet food and supplies, and scheduled several pets for spay/neuter surgeries in the coming weeks. It was a perfect example of how these clinics are more than just medical care—they are about building relationships, breaking down barriers and creating a community where people and pets alike feel safe and supported.

Lyle: A Fun-loving Dog Ready for Adventure

enews-march25-featured pet

Lyle is a fun and adventurous 3-year-old pit bull mix who has been looking for a family at Seattle Humane since arriving in the Pacific Northwest through a Lifesaver Rescue transfer out of Louisiana back in November. Lyle loves to play with squeaky toys and will even bring them along on his walks. He has plenty of energy for taking his new family on adventures in the great outdoors. His foster parent says he’s very affectionate and eager to learn, and his new family will want to continue his training when he goes home. Lyle did well living with teens in his foster home. Due to his size and play style, he would do best in a home with no small children. Lyle’s new family can name his adoption fee and put those savings toward lots of chew toys and his ongoing training!

If you can’t bring Lyle home, you can still donate to his care or share him with your followers on Facebook or Instagram!

Our March Foster Spotlight couldn’t wait to start fostering cats for Seattle Humane and has a dedicated space in her home where she’s helped more than 40 forever grateful felines prepare for their final journey home! Jonna’s fostering stories even inspired her parents to volunteer at their local shelter, and they might even encourage you to open your hearts and homes to a shelter pet in need.

February eNews | Best Friends & Special Events!

Learn more about best friends Cheeto & Mochi.

Give Monthly

Best Friends Fur-ever!

In September, Cheeto (FKA Spice) and her siblings came to Seattle Humane through our friends at Underground Community Cat Rescue. She had an upper respiratory infection and needed a little more time than her siblings in a foster home. Mochi (FKA Rocket Jr.) also came to us in the late summer from The Good Cat Network in Hawaii and we quickly spotted the telltale signs of ringworm, which delayed his adoption for a month while he was treated for that persistent fungal infection. It just so happened that Mochi was cleared for adoption at the time Cheeto’s family was searching Seattle Humane for a kitty companion for her. Adopted two days apart, Cheeto and Mochi have spent the past three months developing a beautiful bond with each other and their new humans.

“They spend a lot of time every day chasing one another around, wrestling and hunting for toys,” their mom says. “Mochi is the cuddliest kitten I have ever met, and spends each night curled up next to my shoulders purring away. He loves to chase Cheeto and find places to hide his spring toys. Best of all, both Cheeto and Mochi love to be around people and greet every person who comes through the door with purrs and cuddles. They are extremely personable, friendly and comfortable around new people.”

Thank you to Cheeto and Mochi’s family for capturing these cuddly moments and for giving these two purrfect kitties a loving home!

If you'd like to support the care of other pets like Cheeto and Mochi while they await their new homes, you can do so by clicking ‘'donate to my care” on each pet’s profile!

Featured Pet: Maximus

Maximus is a very handsome shelter cat who just celebrated his third birthday at Seattle Humane, where he’s been looking for a family since last May. Maximus is very playful and enjoys receiving pets, though like most cats, on his terms. He will even play fetch! Maximus will do best in a family with lots of cat experience and who can read his body language to know when he’s getting overstimulated or uncomfortable. He will also benefit from his own private space inside his new home where he can decompress. Anyone wanting to adopt Maximus should understand that it will take time for him to settle into his new home environment. His new family can name his adoption fee!

You can help by sharing his posts on Facebook or Instagram!

More than a Shelter: Tackling Pet Overpopulation

February is World Spay Month and Seattle Humane is again participating in a collective effort regionally to provide services to the community and highlight the importance of spay & neuter! Visit the World Spay Month webpage hosted by our partners at Pasado’s Safe Haven to learn more about this tremendous effort by 14 partners across the region to complete more than 4,600 spay & neuter surgeries this month. Seattle Humane’s goal is to complete 800 of those surgeries for shelter and community pets. Check out our website to learn more about our Spay & Neuter Clinic and the crucial services we offer year-round through the Schuler Family Medical Center.

Foster Spotlight: Renee B.

With fostering, "goodbye is the goal." We want our foster pets to reach the stage where they’re ready to move on from their foster home to their adoptive home. It can be hard to say goodbye to a foster pet when you’ve put weeks and sometimes months into caring for them. Thankfully, Seattle Humane foster parent Renee B. knows every new foster will become her favorite in no time!

Our February Foster Spotlight grew up with a zeal to heal that started with animals, but Renee ended up pursuing a career in human medicine.

“I’ve loved and been drawn to animals my whole life,” she says. “I was that kid who brought home injured birds, squirrels and rabbits and tried to nurse them back to health. I also grew up with dogs and had a pony. If I hadn’t become a human doctor, I would probably have become a veterinarian.”

Read more about Renee B.’s foster journey here!
